It's Ari-Effing-Zona and we are going to be around 115° to 117° this next week. Because of that, when I get out of the truck, I leave it on MAX COOL and then remote start the vehicle about 5 to 10 minutes before I get in next time. It kinda knocks the edge off the convection oven waiting inside for me.

Problem - When I touch the door handle, it turns off the engine, then I get in and start it right back up.

Why does it stop the engine just because I'm getting in the truck? Last vehicle was a Ranger and it would let you get in then push the dash button, the truck dashboard would wake up and you could then put it in gear. Not the Taco.

From what I understand Toyota designed it that way.

Yep, from what I understand that's how Toyota designed the remote start.

Normal. It's Toyota's security feature to stop someone from driving your truck away. Models without push button start don't do this though.

You and just about everyone else on here with remote start, unfortunately. No one has made a workaround.

You could always make it so just your driver's door unlocks when you hit the unlock button, start the truck, then manually lock it. But that kind of defeats the purpose of remote start and allows someone the opportunity to break in and drive away. You'll get a warning about no key, but the truck will drive as long as it isn't shut off.

The way Ford had it was that the fob had to be present inside the vehicle and the start button pushed to be able to drive the vehicle.
So the doors stayed locked and only the keymaster could operate the Truck.

I'd have to double-check which one I have, because the previous owner had it installed but it only turns off if you step on the brake - prior to turning the ignition to On. It has definitely come in handy on hot/cold days.

It's because you have a key. This only applies to push to start.

No, it's just poor implementation by Toyota. It adds nothing other than annoying the owner.

It's slightly annoying and from what I have read/heard,,, nearly impossible to defeat (for push button start autos, anyways)

Unsure if it saves 10 cents in programming or whatever the reason is, lack of key takeover ability from push to start Toyotas really is annoying. But there is no fix, and probably never will be as it would require reprogramming of the factory smartkey module which just isn't practical for the inconvenience caused.

I don't remember where I got this from, but it indicates that N2 Designs does know the work-around..

I have the N2 for pushbutton start. Installed last fall. Mine shuts off, but I remembered saving that screenshot from parts unknown back when I was considering buying the remote start. My Armada with factory pushbutton start is much more sensible than this Tacoma method.
