FWIW, an entire drive shaft assembly can be had for $500 or less from various aftermarket supplies, last I looked. The U-joints are also replaceable individually. I have read that some believe the double joint in the two piece versions can also be rebuilt, but not that easily.

Also FWIW, I had a local shop tell me the A/C work I needed would cost me thousands and the evaporator and expansion valve needed to be replaced and that meant the entire dash needed to come out. Which is was nonsense. I replaced both in a couple of hours as it is right in the passenger foot well area.

I can't remember exactly but there should be a hole along the outer ring. That hole should be facing down.

Possibly. But with how much counterfeit parts are on Amazon, I would search up the part number and buy it from a reputable source. I rarely use Amazon for car parts now.

This CB should be the OE one. Many people say that it even has Toyota molded into it.

Amazon is wrong a lot. Read the reviews.

FWIW, if it's sold and shipped by Amazon then it's a legit part. If it's sold by a third party, I'd treat it as suspect and do your research before ordering.

This is the one I purchased back in 2019. Just put it on recently and have had ZERO issues with it.

    NOTE: Sold by AMAZON

Also a quick note on aftermarket drive shafts... just stick with OE, you'll be much happier. You get what you pay for.

Not saying it is or isn't correct but Summit lists in their fitment notes for Spicer 211750-1X that it is compatible with 97-04 4WD Tacomas (in addition to the T100, Tundra, etc.).

Like I said "it does fit and work" but it is most definitely not the same.

What would call for a total replacement of the driveshaft? are all the components replaceable besides the straight metal shaft pieces themselves?

Trail damage, 2 to 4wd conversion, moving to a 1 piece, etc.

You can replace any component for the right amount of $, availability of course being the deciding factor.
For the shafts, driveline specialty shops can and do fab up custom shafts.

Yep, I wasn't aware of this thread at the time but a couple years ago I needed a replacement carrier bearing and ordered the Spicer part from Amazon. After comparing the OEM to that part I sent the Spicer part back. Even though I knew it would fit, I didn't like that there wasn't a dust seal like the OEM has. I could be mistaken but I believe that Spicer part is the same as the OEM carrier bearing for 2wd T00/Tacoma/Tundra application.

I'd just use partsouq. I've ordered from them more times than I can count at this point (used them extensively during the 4wd conversion). They process the order quick and get it out the door. Shipped via air of course. I remember one order, placed it on a Friday and it was here on Monday. Oh and I've never questioned if a part wasn't legit.

My second choice would be McGeorge.

That Spicer 211750-1X center bearing was installed on my '97 V6 Taco 4x4 5 speed manual last summer. The box was marked JAPAN, the bearing was marked "TOYOTA 37235-14011", it fit perfectly, and is working just fine. I ordered it from SUMMIT with a couple jugs of Lucas gear oil to get the free shipping.
