Now setting himself on fire well, that's expected as a MIG welder :anonymous:

Oh no for sure, each state is different and out here just one insurance covers most.

The added ones are earthquake and fire, but fire due to those large disaster fires that take out many square miles of land and property.

I lost my motorcycle and other personal belongings when a building housing my stuff caught fire in the fires out in southern CA back in...2007 was it? Or 2008.

I was in Iraq so you can imagine how helpless I was when that shit happened.

Least I got a nice insurance payout from it. Just sucked that it was my first motorcycle, a clean CBR F4I.

If it was my house, I definitely would, but I'm renting so can't mess with any of that stuff. Ended up getting a Hobart 140 handler. Loving it so far.

Idk about “not costing a lot” anyways. Seems relative at best.

I put in my own sub panel not that long ago, with a 30 amp 120v and 30 amp 240v branch.
It cost like over $300 for 75 ft of 6 gauge feeder (to the sub panel.) That’s not including the conduit, THHN (branch circuits), the 50 amp rated 6-50 outlet, the weather proof boxes, the service panel breaker, etc.

I’m not including the sub panel cost, or the permit cost since that’s not relevant to the discussion but..

…I could only imagine what a residential electrician would cost, added in.

I would side on the side of 'costing more than you'd think' for sure.

I lucked out with my short run...cost me under $100 which includes 6 gauge romex, 2 pole 50 amp breaker, interior trim plate, and everything else associated.

    Did it myself :anonymous:

Whatcha guys bending 1/2" solid rod with?

With the exception of man handling it on a vise with a MAPP torch like I did earlier

Got some left over but since I'm making more of these mounts, I want a tool to make it easier instead of working like a Neanderthal.

Forgot about this thread before seeing it pop on the front page list thingy. Thanks to everyone doing cool stuff, it motivated me to want to do cool stuff too and I signed up for a GMAW class at the local tech college. 7 weeks ago I had never touched a welder before, now I can sometimes run things like this.

Have a great weekend and keep doing cool things.

Next thing you know you'll be turning your garage into a shop and start fabricating stuff for others.

It's a great hobby for sure!

Agreed and that's the plan. Already have more ideas than money to make them happen. Garage is already an auto shop more or less. Adding welding to the tool bag only makes it a more capable shop. I have no idea why I never did this sooner, always wanted to and should've listened to inner voice a little better.

Same. I only started welding like 2 years ago so I don't post much here.

Only my excuse was I never had time; now I have too much

Time to get a real torch heat that nice and red in your vise put a piece of pipe and very easily bend as you need.

You can even use assorted round objects as dies to get the bend radius you need.

Given the choice for what I did oxy-fuel over a plasma unit .

I made another Harley sign yesterday. Got a friend who wanted one "with wings".

It's 26" x 8". I may make a bigger version, or go to thicker metal if I make more. In 18 gauge I had a few close calls to thin areas dropping out.

Been making some more of these deerhead.

I was going to go with hydraulic but I thought that was overkill .

Then got distracted thinking about what I used.

Spend the money to go hydraulic but your pretty much out of room.

You can go low tech and build your own or get electric / hydraulic and be fancy .

If your planning to be bending bar stock all the time.

I'll just have to make something then.

Hydraulic would be for a tube bender, which I attempted a few times to do over the phone with JD Squared but they're horrible with comms.

For 1/2" solid I figured I overlooked something as it can be bent manually, the key is leverage. I have a cheap tool that does up to 3/8" solid pretty well but won't handle 1/2". I'll just have to recreate that same tool at a larger scale.

    i would keep using heat.

any non-heated bending tools are going to have a rather large bending radius

I'm ok with a large bending radius, comes with the territory. I'll be figuring out a tool to take on my own for this one.

the harbor freight hydraulic bender does up to 2" tube, should easily handle 1/2" solid rod
