We are actually still trying to work through those details on getting there. I’m leaning towards coming across Canada and crossing into Wisconsin around Lake Michigan. From there I haven’t got much else planned, I really need to get at it.

Those of you who travel extensively throughout the CO backcountry - is there a need to carry any spare gas? Where we typically travel in Maine you can easily use 10 extra gallons in a weekend. There isnt any cell coverage, let alone any gas stations.

Without having an exact route planned through CO yet, its hard to look at a map and see where the closest towns are.

You’ll be shocked by how much fuel a truck inhales when it’s farting around at .5 mph, I typically had a gas can on me, but I never had used one myself… I did help refill a side-by-side that broke down on the trail. And obviously those were the NATO “water cans.”

    Lifted, Armored, needs more lights.
I carry 1 just to be "safe" but have never been forced to use it, always make sure to top off before running a trail.

Thats about what I figured. It seems like a big state, but maybe not as 'remote' as some areas Im used to in terms of access to facilities & civilization

Not sure if Gunnison/Crested Butte is on your list of places to go. If you come in through Denver you could go down 285 like someone else recommended and get into Buena Vista/Salida. There are a couple of hot springs between the two. Also some mountain passes from BV to CB. Pearl pass and Tincup pass are around there.

A good number of camping spots around there.

If you're just passing through to get to Durango or something, Hartman rocks, just south of Gunni is a good option.

Awesome, thanks for the info. I think we had a recommendation above for some hot springs. Will certainly add those passes to the list as well

    Yeah.
As others have said, I'd personally avoid I-70, 285 is a good choice if coming in from the north but you still have to get through Denver. We usually come in from the south, so only familiar with good camping options on the way in that are down that way.

So many options. The area south of I-70 and north of 50, west of Buena Vista (hot springs area) has plenty to explore. Heading through Creede, over Stony Pass down into Silverton, then Ouray and Telluride is also awesome.

I've carried extra gas in the past but never needed it, so I stopped messing with it.
