I have a 2020 trd off road. I want to pull a camper. Haven’t picked one yet but weight could be 2000-4000 lb. Any suggestions for a trailer brake? Is this something I could install on my own? I am not handy. Thanks

I assume you are talking about a brake controller. I have a Redarc. Space in the cab is limited and it tucks out of the way with the control dial placed in an open dash plug.

I don't know about the best...but I also have a redarc. It works on par with the much cheaper ones I've had. Real benefit is the remote head only takes up one switch blank and the rest of the unit can be tucked up under the dash.

Instal is a little worse than the older plug in and bolt to dash, but the cleanness is worth the price in as tight a space as the taco.

I have a 2.7 5speed that came with an OEM hitch and 4 pin wiring from the dealership. I installed everything to put in a 7 pin plug and brake controller. It took me about 6 hours, but wasn’t all that difficult. I later added a relay to cut 12v power to the trailer when the truck was off.

@Eagle200 if you have a TRD your rig is wired for the brake controller so an install will not take you what it took @Nessmuk to install. I have a RedArc Tow Pro Elite and redarc sells a harness that plugs directly into the factory harness so all you need to do is:
    • Pick a mounting location for the brains of the brake controller
    • Plug the brake controller into the factory TRD harness (driver's side kick plate)
    • Plug the brake controller into the chassis ground (driver's side kick plate)
    • Pick a spot for the brake controller switch/controller
Check out my install pics. Even if you go with another brand the install steps should be similar (1. mount the controller somewhere, 2. plug it in to the factory harness 3. go tow). I have a towing section in the build thread linked in my signature that may or may not be of value - peruse at your leisure but like anything on this site take with a grain of salt as these are my own experiences and lessons learned.

Yours is a TRD Off Road I am willing to bet. To make sure go to https://www.toyota.com/owners/vehicle-specification/ which is Toyota's VIN lookup tool. You will be redirected to sign in with your Toyota account. Do so or sign up for a free account. Enter your VIN then look at the "Grade" field for your Taco. It will say TRD Off Road. There are no Toyota Tacoma models that are just Off Road... it is either a TRD Off Road or it isn't.
