It was rarely in hot weather. I live in the mountains of Colorado... hottest it usually ever gets is like 80 degrees. So far this year it's barely reached the 70s. I did run 0w-20 (per the manual) in it though.

It does do a lot of very hilly driving though -- no way around it where we're at.

It was AT. I wouldn't say I have a terribly gentle foot, but I didn't drive like a maniac either. I've had much older much higher mileage cars did just fine with my driving habits in the past.

They hadn't taken down the engine to really check what happened, but they did suggest it could either be a spun bearing, a hole in a piston, or both.

As for what a previous owner did to it... I bought it used with 4500miles, so there wasn't too much opportunity for someone else to fuck it up. I've always changed the oil regularly, and it's been in for maintenance.

Seems like a super unfortunate fluke to me.

That is a pretty good price and option. Core and shipping? These 11-14k dollar quotes I keep hearing on here is ridiculous.

I know this is probably a shot in the dark, but how many miles are on that engine? Might it be worth talking to the Service Manager and/or Toyota to see if they are willing to help out on a goodwill basis?

OP said 78k. Definitely worth a shot. Or at least 50/50

Sorry this happened to your engine. I'm going to tag you in another thread and maybe you can put some information in your post.

I like the option @US Marine posted from Summit. We can search some reputable shops in the Denver area to perform the removal and replacement for you as well.

On a side note, we do have a lot of really awesome members that will give you the shirt off their backs to help out. Like any other site we get the typical keyboard warrior that has never been punched it the mouth or been held accountable for the diarrhea that comes out of it.

Have you tried calling your insurance company and see what they have to say.

Yeah, I normally never take my vehicles to a dealership. In fact, I have a regular mechanic I use that I was going to have it towed to (but they were closed, so I just had it sent to the dealer). Glad I didn't though because I just went over there to talk to the guy and see if he could do any better on price or give me some suggestions... turns out he retired and closed shop (after 32 years) last Thursday. Yay."

Anyway, in that vein, does anyone here have a mechanic they trust in the Denver area?

They say "you don't have mechanical breakdown coverage". Unfortunately comprehensive coverage only covers accidents and the like.

I'm reaching out to some people that might be able to help. Is this your daily driver or do you have some time?

Thanks man, really appreciate it. This is my daily driver, however I work from home so I don't really need to drive daily... I can get by borrowing my wife's car if I need to go somewhere for a while at least.
