2022 TRD OR - Rear diff howling?

It’s got to do with how the leaf springs and shocks and frame react with each other. Replacement of rear diff will most likely change nothing. They replaced mine and same exact noise. I’d rather know it’s harmonics and not mechanical . They could possibly come out with a new leaf spring design again that might fix the problem. Time will tell

 

What other issues have you had?

 

Many. Not to hijack this thread, but feel free to search recent posts of mine. Third replacement went in around 1,000 miles ago.

 

I’m saying beside the rear diff replacements ? What other issues?

 

Using search feature:

Replaced howling rear differential - second one already howling. Update, so is third one.
No crank, no start - left me stranded requiring tow both times. Both after a new battery and fuel pump recall.Supposedly pinched wire in harness.
Replaced faulty A/C compressor.
Timing cover leak.
Replaced ABS brake actuator.
Reduced braking performance athighway speeds. VIN does not qualify for brake booster recall.
CEL - Emissions related, replaced fuel emissions vapor canister.
Engine idler pully replaced due to rattling noise.
Numerous interior rattles/ squeaks/pops; seats, headliner, speakers, dash.

 

Amsoil helped mine. It lowered temps and altered harmonics a bit.

Before the haters feel the need to chime in: Not an Amsoil fanboy by any means, there’s just not much other competition in the high end synthetic gear lube market. When it comes to engine oil, I agree there are plenty of other great choices.

 

There are a lot of Tacoma's sold and the reality is there are very few complaints on rear differential noise. Same holds true for other companies. Those that do have complaints they try to fix. All ring and pinion gears make some kind of noise. I don't think they solve the noise problem but their efforts satisfies the vast majority of those few customers that have that complaint.

 

I think you're more right than you know. ECGS recommends 75w-140 gear lube for their rebuild differentials. Thicker viscosity oils will help with harmonic vibrations.

 

Yup. And it’s not just the added weight, it’s the operating temperature. Amsoil does produce lower diff temps in testing than other gear oils.

 

My 2021 TRD OR A/T had a very noticeable "howl" to it from new. My current 2022 TRD OR M/T is very, very faint and slightly higher pitched. I just turn the radio up louder

 

It seems like that's the consensus, it can be replaced but will eventually come back and can often be worse. I might not bother with trying to get it looked at then...

I remember on my TJ, after getting a custom built axle they required regular ol' dino and thick viscosity. If synthetic was found in it, they'd void warranty due to its lack of pulling heat out.

I'd have to do some googling to figure out what gear oil is in the Tacoma from factory.

 

Bought a new 05 Access cab MT and less than a year I had a whine in 5th around 55mph. Bearings were junk and trans fluid they showed me sparkled. Instead of a new trans they rebuilt it. 9 months late same whine.
This time they put in a "reconditioned" trans. Remember this is a manual. 6-7 months down the road wife calls me and say there's big puddle where I park my truck after I went to work. Blew a freeze plug. Fortunately the top one or my driveway would have look like an oil tanker spill. They had to replace trans, clutch, throw out bearings the works because it was all soaked in fluid. Should have done it right the first time aoles.
Stay on their asses like non stop flies buzzing on....
Also on my 05 I replaced rack and pinion, left front bearings and left drive axle along with u-joints twice, water pump....never did any of this on my 86 4x4.
Had it 17 years but my old 1986 was a waaaaay tougher truck, 212k miles, original shocks, springs and never had front end aligned. Drove straight and tires wore even. Like a dummy sold it.

Anyway point is, new stuff is mighty comfy with everything but a lot of it is poorly made or assembled, hence so many warranty claims.

I'll still take my 4x4 v6 2023 Tacoma over anything else on the road. 18 months and all good so far.

If I'm not mistaken the factory fill on the truck is 75w-85. Might want to try some 75/110 or 75/140, it might help dampen it just enough to not care. I must be lucky because mine is as quiet as they get with 75/85.

 

My 20 off road has done this since 2500 miles now I’m at 40k no mechanical problems had fluids changed . No strange metal flakes . It seems to be just a noise issue . From what I have read it seems to affect the off road versions . Might be a rear locker related but just my guess . I wouldn’t worry about it .

 

I have a slight wine don't know if I would call it a howl on my 2023 with 2k miles. It has done it since day one! My 2017 Pro did the same thing as well. I hear it/does it at 45/50 on throttle lift!

 

My 2019 did it since Day 1. There is a tsb for it which includes replacing the rear leaf springs and adding dampers to the rear cab mounts. I purchased and installed just the dampers on mine but didnt notice a difference.

I would be interested in hearing feedback from anyone who replaced the rear leaf packs with aftermarket springs and if the noise was gone afterwards.

 

Yes that has happened. New leafs, less noise. However, it's also not happened. No guarantees.

The rear cab dampers in the tsb seem to have helped some for most that have tried them.

I have a 2020 TRD OR I bought used not too long ago with 50k miles. Was all stock. Stock tires has about 15k miles on them and appeared to be worn evenly and rotated. My truck did the same thing (6sp manual). Ended up going to a new larger tire and noise went away completely.
