Personally I would change out oil every 3-5k no matter what type of driving (daily or special conditions) to be sure there is no issues regardless and so the truck runs for 300k+

All other things being equal, 5,000 mi changes most probably lead to less wear than 10,000 intervals. Whether that less wear means the actual real world lifespan of the truck is affected is debatable.

It likely depends on other conditions such as driving style, dust, GVR, inclines, traffic, etc., which is likely why Toyota specifies severe duty conditions. If you’re a 5k mi guy and drive another 1-2k on a flat highway, it’s probably not a big deal at all. If you’re a 10k guy and change 1-2k early, you’re probably reducing wear and/or varnishing a little bit.

My truck is driven in the mountain west with extra weight. From my own personal research I believe 5-6k or 1 yr changes with top shelf oil is best for my use case. My UOAs have supported this conclusion.

    What a bunch of nerds.

I can't believe there's a thread about changing your oil.

None of the info shared in these oil threads has any value.

Posting something such as "I used (blank) brand of oil and no issues so far" helps nobody

I’m glad you focused on the key point of not being a dick to people in general rather than taking a tangentially related segue into reductio ad absurdum!

looks like salazam has been here since 2010. He's seen how these threads go nowhere and are pointless.

Give it a few years and you'll understand too

I think this thread boils down to two factors, the 5k guys and gals projecting (not judging, I’m one of you:thumbsup:) their assurance that their engines are being maintained above and beyond what is expected, and the 10k guys and gals projecting or seeking reassurance/peace of mind (not judging) that pushing the envelope of risk does not outweigh the reward of longevity.

It’s so nice you’re focusing on the main point and not a tangent.

I wheeled my rig heavy into the NE + Quebec and ended up getting OCI twice in Maine at 2 different small town yota shops
It was probably overkill but I still had a long journey left and using conventional 5w30 oil IDK if that can stretch 10k or no?

Yes it's very important we focus on the main point. What is the point again?

As far as wear 5k vs 10k, it sure didn't show anything with the oil analysis sheets I received for my tundra at 100k, and 200k when doing 15k mile oil changes. I think even at 10k miles your more than safe with todays synthetics, and filters.
I do agree on your driving style, but even there, I had some winter towing for the first 5 years with my truck. All else was pretty standard asphalt use.

You do realize that is an advert created by a dealer, a dealer that makes money when you come in for an oil change.

Everything that constitutes "severe duty" can be measured by an UOA. Contaminates? UOA (and your efforts would be better spent on a proven better filter, again UOA). Oil Breakdown? UOA. Fuel Dillution? UOA (and taking a 30 minute drive once a week would be better than changing the oil). Moisture? UOA (and taking a 30 minute drive once a week would be better than changing the oil). The only reason for severe duty argument IS breakdown of the oil, which can be easily measured

To be honest, if you think you drive in the "severe duty" conditions then you should be getting a UOA WAYYY more than guessing at mileage. The simple fact of the matter is most of what is described as "severe duty" is not really that hard on oil, not modern oils, and instead most just use it as rationalization for their actions.

And I'm pretty sure there are UOAs around that show use under "severe duty" being just fine. In fact I think you would be hard pressed to find a UOA where the oil had deteriorated and any use and pretty much any mileage.

Hey how often should I change the air in my tires? I heard it gets stale after 3k miles.
