I feel ya. You are making something and need the damn bolt and you either make it with something too big or too small or you stop what you are doing and drive like 45 min round trip to bolt shop and grab food on way then get back then you're like fuck it, ill finish that tomorrow.

If you have the damn bolt, you are done before the stupid, fat and tired you gets home from a 45 min drive with 1 bolt and a value meal. Classic case of being cheap is so damn expensive.

    Classic example is my skid.

Really it's a one day job, and I pretty much did it within that time frame since I've been super busy with home+baby stuff in between. I've got what, a total of 3 hours into it including the templates?

Anyway, I always wanted to run carriage bolts for the two most rear bolts (since they sit lower) so I ordered some in 5/8" recently. I run metric for everything, so I ran these slots for M10 hardware originally.

Knowing I made the slots a hair wider (for not so super tight tolerances) I thought I'd get away with it.

    20230623_112655.jpg

Nope, and I don't want to widen the slots cause I would want them square as they are now so...I'm hoping to try two 5/16" carriage bolts tomorrow and finish it up.

If not then just the usual M10 hardware I've got laying around.

I was gonna add that to my rant. The whole, it may work now but you make one small change and now that bolt is worthless or in that case its like 2mm too small and you are hittin with the unibit like a savage (your Morgan Clark spirit is laughing while you do that)!!! and you know it. I took some shortcuts I plan on fixing on my truck but its amazing how 1 wrong bolt can snowball into a shit show real quick. @02hilux knows whats up with that too.

Those letters look ok. Which tip you use on your oxy torch?:rofl::rofl::rofl:

Little time to myself so figured I'd work up the skid mounting. Cut the last remaining mounting bracket and went up to figure out fitment.

Parts laid out; all stainless steel hardware (pictured is some zinc hardware I later swapped out).

    20230625_121158.jpg

Order of 5/16" carriage bolts arrived just in time and they're a perfect fit.

    20230625_090046.jpg

We were talking about hardware...how missing a bolt could really set you back. Well, that fucking shit happened today.

The M10 80mm bolts I picked up to sandwich the frame are in 1.25 pitch; every single M10 nut at home is 1.50 pitch and I have a shit ton

No worries, I can still figure out fitment by zip tying the mounts around the frame to keep it in place. And no, space is way too tight for a clamp to fit.

Moving forward to get shit going, found it way too difficult to - hold my welding mask since I can't wear my hood underneath, hold a mount, torch, and arm all at once. Doing shit alone sucks so I opted to create a temporary solution.

    20230625_131750.jpg

Used some of that 1/2" solid rod to mock up the rear mount. I don't expect to hit big rocks this Wednesday so this mount will be more than enough. Once I'm back, I can mock it up with square tube as intended, and go with the U bolt method around the frame.

While the paint dries, I figure it's time to grab the right hardware and it'll be ready for install once it all dries up.

Can you believe hardware was holding me back?

Now I have a lot of extra 5/16" and 3/8" carriage bolts all in stainless steel.

I should make another skid plate for my transmission or something.

Only stainless for truck stuff; the rest is all zinc plated for non-truck stuff

Be cautious, most SS are not rated for high strength. Don't ask me I know.

The carriage bolts are the only ones not rated, the rest are 8.8 but the carriage bolt would only see damage at the exposed head.

Is it manageable to install solo?

Yeah, on rc stuff you don't use stainless. You use black oxide 10.9

Take that back, grade 18-8 stainless which makes it just weaker than grade 8.

No biggie but hey, learned something new on the carriage bolts.
