Mostly stock, just getting it to my liking, just happy to have had the taco and now my 4Runner.
Sadly the show isn’t still being made, best show that kept me sane during reconstructive knee surgery recovery.

Any chance this was a "Certified" used from a Toyota dealer? If so you might still have power train warranty. 7year/100,000 miles I believe.

If you owe $12K on it you have no choice but to fix it and drive it IMO. I'd be looking for a good independent mechanic and a scrapyard engine. You should be able to get her running for about 1/2 the quoted price.

They sell a lot of 85 octane gas at altitude in Colorado. You're not supposed to use that in most newer vehicles. A steady diet of that gas certainly wouldn't be good for the engine. Don't know if it would do enough damage to ruin it at only 78,000 miles

Interesting, i use mostly 87 octant when running around here in LA but i do make a lot of trips to big bear hauling a lot of weight. Should i run premium when driving the truck up to 8,000ft elevation?

With the few major engine failures I’ve read on here I’m wondering if it had anything to do with engine break in being completely ignored when the truck was new. Some people just brush it off some are adamant about it, I’ve just been trying to keep it around 65mph and below 3500 rpm

Another option, and something one of my coworkers did with his 3.5 EB Exploder Sport after the motor blew was traded it in on a new vehicle. He got book minus the 8K it was going to cost to repair a 120K mile SUV. He came home with a 4Runner in Lunar Rock.

Damn man, sorry to hear this happened to you. Maybe, just maybe once it's looked at thoroughly it may not be toast. As a few others have said, and I believe you're agreeing, you have to fix based on the financial implications. Hopefully, if you have to swap, you'll find a good engine and install method/price.

Just to put in my 2 cents worth, if you did decide not to go back with a Toyota engine, find a good, used Cummins B2T diesel :dancingbacon: I looked into doing this on the '83 I'm restoring, but more money than I was willing to spend. Especially since the original engine is strong and runs great.

Anyway, I wish you the best on getting this resolved quickly and as economical as possible.

I know you’re out of warranty but maybe reach out to Toyota to see if they can goodwill part of the cost ? Not sure if you explored this yet

Pretty crappy deal, OP. These unannounced engine failures are just weird. If it were me, I would probably get a used engine. But as mentioned above, trading it might be an option. I guess it will depended on your finances.
