You could just trade it for a 4th gen this fall. Then you’d have disc brakes with a lot less effort!

So, on one hand, this thread is about encouraging spending. On that note I encourage doing a rear disc brake swap. Plus then I get to see what you do and decide if I want to do it some day. Frankly with my camper shell and drawers I might as well have a 4Runner already and those have discs, right?

On the other hand, everything I've read says doing that upgrade on the OffRoad with our funky electronic brake booster thingamabob that can't be swapped for a Tundra booster it's not always worth it. Plus the parking brake on a disc setup will always be weaker than the stock drums (to a point of being on hills/inclines and it not working to stop you).

Luckily I already have too many projects and decided to stick with drums because most stopping comes up front. I drive slow so I don't need racecar brakes when I can already put myself through the windshield in a panic stop. More money for other mods that will give more immediate fun.

But you should totally do it so I can see how it works.

The only thing that stands out, and might help my decision making, is that mine is a faker-its a SR5 (being built into a mighty mighty.) If I can do the Tundra swap, well... whats to stop me? Oh... yea. Cash. And wife. Wife is a big one.

I always forget yours wasn't an OR to begin with. In that case, definitely do it.

This is true! The parking brake on my 4Runner is absolute garbage compared to the parking brake on my second gen Taco.

@pearing - I would totally skip the rear disc brake conversion. I think you could spend the money on much better things, like 37s

Perhaps it was never adjusted properly at the factory or something but at a particularly steep boat landing I pushed on it as hard as I possibly could until it bottomed out and the truck still started rolling backwards so I had to put it in park to keep it in place.

I do drive fast (ish), I don't have a problem finding the edges of my ABS fairly regularly. I don't understand the desire to do the upgrades, though I will admit I have explored what's involved. I just can't justify the expense/ can't convince myself I need it. When I need front pads, I will try something a little more aggressive, though.

I know, I know, what kind of crazy talk is this? Justify...convince...maybe I need therapy.

Do you have something picked out?

I ended up with Powerstop Evolution, and they seem good so far.

This isn't about "need". I don't need any of the stuff I have done to this truck. Upgrades are a mixed blessing-usually they end up being a bigger PIA. I acknowledge that fact. I like the puzzle and the unique "cool" factor of having something different. Front brakes are a no brainer and Adam has it figured out. Rear discs? Puzzle time.

Thanks for bringing this topic up. Since I suffer from CRS I keep forgetting about it. Right now money is set aside for kitchen remodeling. That project is happening now.
    :spending: × alot.

    @wi_taco
Thank you for sharing all your info on this upgrade.

A 2024 Tacoma Trail edition would be cheaper. Just saying!

So, let me see if I understand you correctly.
    I demo my kitchen.
Use the money to buy a new Tacoma.
Wife kicks me out of the house.
I move to Madison and I become a squatter in your back yard.
Twice a week you make me quail eggs for breakfast.
