It routes your web traffic thru a series of servers in a way that is untraceable - it was created by a Navy DOD project back in the day

for Pibbs, @MQQSE @lynyrd3 and anyone else who is curious as to what "TOR" is.

You may have heard of the "Dark Web", or the "Deep Web"? TOR is not directly a part of that, but it is the main way to access those "secret" places on the internet. TOR is an acronym for The Onion Router. If you have a basic understanding of what a VPN (Virtual Private Network) is, TOR is basically a similar thing. You run a software application on your laptop, smartphone, etc. that talks between your device and the servers of the VPN provider, or TOR network of servers. This software creates a special, encrypted communication "channel" between your device and the server it is talking to, through this application (the VPN software you installed, or the TOR software).

There are two main benefits to using a VPN:
    1. In theory, at least, even if someone (hacker, government agency,...) is monitoring your network traffic from your device to wherever, it is now encrypted between your device and the VPN or TOR server you are connected to, and so the entity spying on you can't figure out what you are doing, what web sites or other places you are going to on the internet. Like military communications being encoded during war time. Navajo Code Talkers, German Enigma machine......
    2. With a VPN, you can *usually* select from a list of that company's servers in many different countries to connect to. So when your traffic then leaves that VPN server, it "appears" as if you/your device are physically located in that same country, regardless of where you actually are. A common use for this capability are people who are located inside a country that severely restricts internet access/use. So let's say you are a journalist currently in North Korea, and you want to access a web site that is normally blocked by North Korea. By using a VPN, and say you select a server in England to connect to, now your traffic appears to be originating in England, not North Korea. Another use would be say you wanted to access some web site that for whatever reason, detects your (network traffic) country of origin, and iot only allows traffic originating in England to connect to this web site or computer. In the above scenario, you are in North Korea, but your network traffic looks like you are in England, so you are able to access this web site/server.

TOR, The Onion Router, is similar to a VPN, in that it sends your network traffic all over the place, through a large number of different servers all over the world, to obscure what you are doing, where you are coming from/going to. TOR gets its name because you can think of the way it works as being like an onion - layer upon layer upon layer of obscurity or abstraction, to hide what's actually going on "underneath".

Looping back around a little.... typically web sites on the Dark or Deep Web restrict incoming traffic, but sources like TOR servers are allowed, so this is a very common way people get to the Dark or Deep webs. The reason they are called "dark" or "deep" is that these web sites are not listed on any search engine, like Yahoo! or Google. You have to already know the exact URL or web address of where you are trying to go, and type it in manually.

    /End of rambling classroom time.
