What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

I did this to my Taco and it is well worth it! An under-the-radar upgrade that is enjoyed every time I drive it.

 

How hard was the headliner for you to complete relative to the floorboard? I just peeked at your build page, looks great!

I'm separating my project into 1) floorboard 2) Dbl cab door panels, 3) headliner stages. thanks!

 

Anyone have any recs for a backup camera mirror to replace the OEM one? There's a ton of options out there. Ideally something that I can also manually turn on the camera outside of reverse

 

I was intimidated by the thought of removing the headliner, but in the end it was easy. Remove all visible obstacles (sun visors, mirror and map lights, pillar trims, coat hooks, etc) and then it drops down easily.

 

I use something like

this. Mine was made by VanTop but they don't sell on Amazon anymore. It mounts to your OEM mirror so not sure it fits your ask of replacing it. You can toggle between front, rear, and both front/rear views. Only issue that I have with it is if the angle of the mirror isn't perfect, the sunvisor hits it when it's pulled down (the front camera is mounted to the left side of the mirror). Other than that, functionality is great and serves dual purpose as a dashcam / security camera.

 

Does it stay in place offroad? my concern with the ones that go on top of your original mirror is the added weight.
That's annoying about the sun visor. That would bug me

 

Reminder that a majority of noise comes through the window seals and door panel

 

You'll be fine. The check engine light will flash when it's actually misfiring which will likely be under hard acceleration. So just drive it smooth and steady. Should be fine.

Clear the code if you can with a scan gauge or ultra gauge.

 

If your mirror already moves offroad, it will definitely exaggerate it. I've had good luck with it staying in my place for the most part.

 

I have the Wolfbox mirror.

The weight is not really that much of an issue. There is an adjustment screw on the mirror, where you can tighten it. The mirror doesn't actually weigh that much.

It's a really good concept. I liked the mirror and how it works.

BUT

They have a known issue between the connection from the actual charging jack to the mirror (inside) comes loose, then the mirror just annoyingly powers it's self on and off and on and off when the contacts (again, inside the mirror) make connection and gives it power. Since I bought the mirror, and this happened to me, I have seen it brought up on multiple reviews on multiple platforms. It does not seem like Wolfbox has, or will, address it.

At this point, I would not recommend.

 

Damn yea that's gonna be a no-go for me in that case.
I wish a replacement mirror existed that had homelink, compass, temp, and a rearview camera all built into one.

 

It sucks because the Wolfbox basically has all that. It's really a nice concept, but that charging jack is garbage. My son works for a place that repairs crap like that. He has the jacks and I bought a replacement battery. He's going to try and repair mine. But who knows if it will be successful until I get it back and test it.

The other thing that kind of sucks about the Wolfbox is the charging cable is a USB Mini, which is kind of older tech, and was never all that good. And now it's not as easy to find cables for it.

One of the nicest looking bear I've ever seen. Gorgeous winter coat, gold nugget blonde with awesome dark under coat. Was boot scooting down the road ahead of us.

You never see a bear that looks that nice hunting in CA cause bear season is always after summer, and they lose their nice coat. I just edited (zoomed) with an app on my phone. Hopefully I can get better resolution when I put it through Davinci for edit. (It's actually GoPro footage so I think it has more digital zoom than what I got off the app)

 

This is another one I was looking at. more expensive and would have to hard mount it onto the windshield. also doesn't have a front facing camera

I plastidipped my wheels and bumpers.

 

Some updates over the last few weeks. My Dad was in town this weekend so finally got to mount the winch. I cribbed some bracket pieces from a trans cooler I haven’t installed yet to relocate the control box. Still debating extending the cables and mounting it along one of the fenders in the engine bay.
Installed the single on board air compressor along the firewall shelf. Upgraded the side mirrors to the 2004 size since I’ve compromised my rear view with the Softopper. And installed the CBI ditch light brackets.
