I freely admit I was "the Nerd" all through school. Elementary, Jr High, High School, College and even beyond college. I always sat front row, as close to center as I could. I'm not a genius, but I never wanted anything or anyone to distract me from hearing everything the teacher / professor said, so I had the best chance to learn whatever it was LOL

I enjoy being able to explain things, always try to come up with ways to explain highly technical things to people so they can actually understand, not just hear words coming outta my mouth that mean nothing to them. I don't know how rigid I would be about quizes first thing in the morning... my Political Science prof in college did that shit, every morning. Based on the assigned homework from the previous class period. Ugh, I hated that.......

TOR has been around for awhile, but since it isn't typically used as just a general purpose internet access mechanism, it's not too commonly known or talked about. And there are some technical differences between TOR and a traditional VPN, but as far as grasping the general idea, they are essentially the same sort of beast.

You may have heard of the "Dark Web", or the "Deep Web"? TOR is not directly a part of that, but it is the main way to access those "secret" places on the internet. Like military communications being encoded during war time. Navajo Code Talkers, German Enigma machine......
2. With a VPN, you can *usually* select from a list of that company's servers in many different countries to connect to. So when your traffic then leaves that VPN server, it "appears" as if you/your device are physically located in that same country, regardless of where you actually are. A common use for this capability are people who are located inside a country that severely restricts internet access/use. So let's say you are a journalist currently in North Korea, and you want to access a web site that is normally blocked by North Korea. By using a VPN, and say you select a server in England to connect to, now your traffic appears to be originating in England, not North Korea. Another use would be say you wanted to access some web site that for whatever reason, detects your (network traffic) country of origin, and iot only allows traffic originating in England to connect to this web site or computer. In the above scenario, you are in North Korea, but your network traffic looks like you are in England, so you are able to access this web site/server.

TOR, The Onion Router, is similar to a VPN, in that it sends your network traffic all over the place, through a large number of different servers all over the world, to obscure what you are doing, where you are coming from/going to. TOR gets its name because you can think of the way it works as being like an onion - layer upon layer upon layer of obscurity or abstraction, to hide what's actually going on "underneath".

Looping back around a little.... typically web sites on the Dark or Deep Web restrict incoming traffic, but sources like TOR servers are allowed, so this is a very common way people get to the Dark or Deep webs. The reason they are called "dark" or "deep" is that these web sites are not listed on any search engine, like Yahoo! or Google. You have to already know the exact URL or web address of where you are trying to go, and type it in manually.

That is a great explanation!

I use it sometimes; I have also used VPN's that spoof my location so I can view media content that is not available in the US. Last March Madness, I was able to make it look like I was in Europe so I could view the broadcast in its entirety vs. being prompted to pay someone halfway thru..

I also use a third party DNS server instead of the one my ISP uses - b/c your ISP can log the sites you visit, even if you are in private browsing mode.

One last note about TOR is that it is slow - markedly slow - so it is not really viable for regular web traffic, like a VPN is.

I am a paid Proton user, so I have been using their VPN ever since they released it a year or two ago?? I have had a Proton email account for a few years now. I am also going to transfer my personal cloud storage from Dropbox top Proton Drive, since that is now available, and I get it for no additional cost as part of my Proton account. They are coming out with a password manager app sometime this year also, which I may switch to from 1Password.
