Thanks in advance for reading. I recently took my 2019 Tacoma SR double cab 4wd in for the 35k mile service. About an hour after dropping off, here is what the dealership texted me:

"the tech found your front outer pads wearing faster than the inner pads. he recommends replacing the pads and rotors and servicing the slide pins $611.00. your [sic] due for a brake fluid flush $161.00, a power steering fluid flush $159.95, a complete drive line service $399.95, a mass air flow sensor $89.95, a throttle body cleaning service $115, a fuel induction service $199.95, an evap cleaning service $110, a nuvi air hvac system cleaning and disinfect $99.95."

So the dealer is recommending a grand total of $1946.75 in maintenance after only 35k miles.

I find it very hard to believe that a truck that cost me $30,500 and which easily should go over 300k miles ACTUALLY needs maintenance which amounts to 6.4% of its total NEW value at this point. Extrapolating that out, at that pace I would pay $16,686 or 54% of the total purchase price of the truck, for maintenance by the time it hits 300k miles. Assuming that more service is required as the vehicle gets older, its actually much worse than that.

Interestingly, after I declined to replace the brake pads, they still passed me on the safety inspection. Maybe this is layman think, but if a vehicle actually needs new brake pads it should not pass a safety inspection without them.

Am I off base in thinking this is completely preposterous??

They're blowin smoke up your arse.

You could do your own pads and rotors for under $200, super quick and easy job..if it was needed. I just did them at 65k miles, could have gone longer but I had a warped rotor and wanted to put all fresh stuff on. All the other stuff they're just trying to make some money off you.

HVAC system cleaning. Lol. It’s mind boggling that people actually pay for that.

    Take your business elsewhere.

Beyond absurd. You're clearly being taken for a ride by the dealer. They're crooks and we all know it. Say 'no thanks' and go enjoy your truck.

Did my front rotors and pads a little while ago..... at 124k miles.

They're slipping... You need a tire rotation too. Tack on $200 for that, maybe $250 if they recommend you're due to have the the spare flipped over or the air changed.

Highway robbery. I doubt any of that needs to be done. Just ask a local shop to perform the factory maintenance due.

I'm lucky to have an independent shop near me that works on nothing but Toyota. And another that does nothing
but Subaru ( wife's car ). I use both and after reading the horror stories only let Toyota rotate the tires at first 5k miles.

Find a good independent shop - the crew at the Subaru shop have been there since I've been going with her new 2017.
You find a shop with the same crew after 6 years they are doing something right and taking care of their people.

I find a good shop like that and I tip the dudes who work on the car too. They really appreciate it and look forward to seeing
me when I come there, and I know I'm in good hands.

I know the car business and understand what a service writer's incentive is all about, but this is one of the most egregious rip off attempts I've seen.

And this is why I pay my local family owned automotive shop 5 mins from my house for everything I don't want to DIY vs going to the dealer in Anchorage. That is some truly sketchy crap. :censored:

As I've gotten older and have seen how my vehicles have reacted to age and hours (as opposed to miles), I sort of do to same thing. There are things that need strict attention, and there are things that seem to be to be a complete waist of time. For me it's fluids. Change oil and after initial service keep an eye on the rest.

    They always try lol
They even do it at the quick lube joints
At that mileage ( if you are keeping the truck long haul ) you should start to pick off all the fluids soon
I would consider both diffs fairly soon Front and rear. Transfer case you can longer or just do all 3 at 50k
Auto trans should be around that time too but maybe 60 k . Brake and power steering look at the brake fluid but at some time should be changed maybe 60 k . I don’t know how mechanically inclined you are but the diffs and transfer are easy. I would pick them off a piece at a time
