I wasn’t aware that was the main cause of the “burnt valve” issue that seems to occur in some 3.5 Tacomas. Most of the cases in the attached thread were in mostly pavement-driven trucks. I’m not saying it’s a common failure, but I haven’t heard about this issue in the 4.0 4Runners. Tbh I’m not sure why this happens since the 3.5 is just a 4.0 with a shorter stroke as I understand it.

Simple. They see 3rd gen owners happy and it galls them because they are not.
The only thing they have is low-end torque, and the 4th gen is about to stomp a hole in that.

Nothing wrong with bashing the 3rd gen for what it deserves. I disliked my first one so much I bought another. Its a love/hate thing. I just wish Toyota did things differently. At the same time, I know the pressure they're under from the federal government to conform to regulations.

No issues with low end torque here. Stock or tuned. I really don’t understand this “lack of low end torque” complaint. My tach rarely goes over 3k RPMs.

Yes, the 4Runner is all around better build quality than the Tacoma. The fit and finish on 4Runners is so nice, They still build and assemble them in Japan and ship them over completed on container ships. You get what you pay for. I personally needed a truck bed for my toys, but otherwise would have a 4R.

I don't either, but it seems to be their rallying cry.

My dad has 2004 and 2015 4R. I honestly don’t see how my dads 2015s fit and finish is better than my Tacoma. I have absolutely no issues with the interior of my Tacoma, no rattles, weird gaps etc and I spend a lot of time off-road. Few scratches on my door panel but that’s about it.

Also, I’ve got no issues with body panels or misaligned hood/bumpers.

Toyota makes quality vehicles no matter where they are built.

Haha! It’s funny because I drove my dads 4R and it’s nothing exciting. It rips when you stomp on it, so does my taco.

I don’t have a 4R, just stating objective facts. They are not “the same parts” last i checked the Tacoma doesn’t have a coil spring rear suspension amongst other differences between the two that makes the 4R the more premium product, hence the higher price. Imagine going to sleep at night thinking that Toyota builds all their vehicles with the exact same parts and that they are all nearly identical because it’s the same company. “Hur dur a Supra just the same as a Sequoia, don’t you see the Toyota badge!?”

You may not like it, but its true.

4runners are assembled in the same factory as LandCruisers in Japan. The door cards are noticeably better, the fit and finish of the center console is better, the steering wheel is centered with the driver seat, the interior is less prone to annoying rattles. Its a better product. Thats why it costs more.

Sweet 4R, congrats on your purchase. The only fault I’d find with a 4R is that it’s not a pickup. And that’s about it.

What’s more entertaining is when these posts inevitably and quickly devolve into the same tired my daddy’s 4.0 beats up your daddy’s 3.5 troll narratives (spoiler:both are GR series motors, both are good…), and then people just end up debating panel gaps like they’re pissing for distance. Speaking of, I’ve got panel gaps the width of the Mariana Trench on my Taco and the truck is still pretty damn awesome. And roughly 230k people every year seem to agree. Resale values only reinforce.

Hopefully Gen4 moves the conversation forward. But I wouldn’t count on it…

Same here. 100%. Its a great vehicle, but if I'm going to have MPGs that bad I really need a bed.

Yup, my Taco isn't perfect, but I think the fact that I've owned a 2016 Tacoma, a 2019 4runner, and decided to get another Tacoma puts me in a pretty unique situation for commenting on the pros and cons.

Lol, 317 lbs/ft at 1700 with "core" 2.4 turbo makes the paltry 260 something at 4K 4.0 look pretty damn weak.

That 4th gen motor makes 3rd and 2nd gens look weak. I guess only time will tell how reliable it is with the higher compression ratio and forced induction. Meanwhile BEV's are out here with 600HP+ and 775+ lb-ft of torque at all times, all the while getting ~70 MPGe. Makes the 4th gen powertrain seem dated and weak on arrival IMO.

You're right, 4th gen powertrain is gonna make BOTH 2nd and 3rd gens look weak. Don't try and distract with your irrelevant BEV comment.

    4th > 3rd & 2nd.

    :)
