I have had a Glock 17 for about 13 yrs. I have absolutly abused this gun. Sliding down a hillside and filling the barrel with rocks, dirt and grass, wade fishing in the river and having the gun partially or completely submerged for hours on end, exposing the gun to all sorts of weather conditions, sitting in a jon boat and having the barrel rub the aluminum seat with every cast, stuff like that. I also carry this gun conceled at times. The only damage is some cosmetics on the top of the slide where the nylon holster rubs. Every time I pull the trigger it goes boom. Never had any issues not matter what I'm feeding it. I have several other pistols (Sig, S&W, Colt) and would never treat them like this. For the money and reliabilty Glocks cannot be beat imo. At one time or another I have traded or sold every pistol I've had but not my Glock.

Can't go wrong with a Glock or M&P. I prefer the M&P myself.

A 9mm with quality hollow point ammunition is a perfectly acceptable personal protection weapon. It is also easy to shoot, which is good because practice is extremely important.

As I stated in an earlier post Glocks are indestructable. Without a doubt the most durable gun in creation.

I'd go for a Glock, they are simple and reliable. I have a model 22 & 27. There is a ton of accessories available for the Glock.

If your sweetie likes the "baby" model 26, get it. As Dr. Phil says 'If Mama ain't happy, ain't nobody happy'.

If you want bigger magazines, you can get a "grip extension" from A&G that slides over other Glock magazines. There's one sized for model 17 mags and one sized for model 19 mags. They fit the contour of the bottom of the grip.

You can can get several different replacement floor plates for the stock magazines that give you another finger grip or more capacity. My favorite is one from Pearce that has a knurled piece for your little finger. I don't remember if it gives you another round or not.

I don't want to get in a flame war over calibers. I think 9mm will do the job. The key is to practice on a regular basis. If your biggest room is 15 foot across, practice at that range. I understand most personal defense situations are at less than 10 feet. Consider getting a punch lock gun safe if there are kids in the house.

    Good luck at the range!
Ken (I need to clean mine from the last trip to the range!)

PS: Use only factory ammo. Glock-haters will point to "blown-up" Glock photos on the web, I think most, if not all, are from hand-loaded ammo. There are many fine choices for "Personal Defense" ammo in the market.

I took the wife out last weekend to shoot our 38 and little frasier. She could handle the 38 no prob. But the main reason why I like the flocks so much she could pick it up and reach the trigger comfortably. If I think she could handle a 40. That's what I would get. But I personally like the quantity of the 9 can hold. And she likes the feel of the 4th gen.

    I love my Glock 23 (.40 SW).

What I would do is compare the 9mm and .40 versions of whatever make/model I was leaning toward. IF the .40 fits all your requirements for size, fit, comfort, capacity, recoil etc then I would go with the 40, since it has slightly more punch.

But, if not, the 9mm is certainly neck and neck with the 40 for power. Not even sure if there is a real advantage. Just my personal preference for the larger diameter bullets within a similar class of weapon.

The 45 is really the best, but harder to make a higher capacity or compact gun out of. The 40 is a pretty good compromise between that and the 9's.

My opinion on 9mm: get a .40 or .45. There is a reason law enforcement agencies aren't using that caliber or are in the process of moving away from it.

Damn right! My .45 has less recoil than my .40. Caliber isn't everything, but technique sure is.

M&P's are nice. I have a 40 Compact and love it. I must admit though that once I got the right holster for my S&W 1911PD it's become my exclusive carry gun.

Consider the Air Marshal's...and the job they do with the environment they work in. I believe there is a reason why they carry the .357 Sig  The shit it tears up en route thru a body. They can't afford to miss let alone hit a person with a round that won't stop or take them down fast. IIRC the UD of the USSS carries the .357 Sig as well.

first off i have done my research and i still prefer my 9mm so when i need to double tap i have low recoil to close group. also my very good friend is a seal sniper instructor and he taught me how to shoot very well. i'm not tryin to start a fight between us and i respect u were former law enforcement but i personally prefer placement over ballistic.

No disagreement with that from me. If one compares a .22 LR to 9/40/45 then ballistics is an issue as the .22 is considered inadequate for general use as protection from human threats.

But if you are talking about anything in the same class as 9/40/45, then it really boils down to not much more than being able to use it and shot placement.

I do agree with you on shot placement, but if your round doesn't have the guts to do the job, your shot placement won't matter. When I was at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in GA, they showed us a news article+video of a man shot in the head with a 9mm. The bullet struck his skull, went around the right side of his head (under the skin) and exited out the back of his head behind the ear and he survived. Somehow that doesn't give me faith in the 9mm as a stopping cartridge.

Lol I was stuck there for 3 months Nov 2009-Feb 2010. Got sick and tired of that food there and ordered pizza a lot! The mall is kinda nice tho. And that Walmart is huge. My buddy and I drove towards St Simons once and ended up in the wrong part of town lol...way down past Willys Wieney Wagon.
