I ordered the Kreg table top router table for my Makita RF 1101

I already have a remote switch and a couple speed controllers

 

New project is a replacement for the table on my Weber BBQ. The plastic one is cracked right in the middle.

Big slab that I'll pull a couple of boards out of. Most of the wood is punky.

and it's got a pretty good bow to it, lol.

Breaking it down.

I added some 5/4" maple pallet wood that is years dry

This will be jointed and planed to give me the boards I need for the glue up.

 

Selected the boards for the glue up. These are jointed on 3 sides.

Checking for size. The plan is for the new table to be a little bigger.

first half in the clamps.

Second half in the clamps.

Then I jointed the center boards and glued it up.

 

Using the old table as a template to layout for the new table.

Some radiuses for the ends instead of just squaring it off.

Off to the bandsaw to cut it out.

After cutting it out I sanded the top with a disc sander and a spindle sander to remove the band saw marks and smooth the edges.

a trim router took care of rounding over the edges top and bottom.

Lots of sanding both with a r.o.s. on the flats and by hand on the edges. It's now ready for finish. It's about 9" larger in length and a couple inches in width.

 

Minwax oil based stain evened up the color of the different boards some.
half of it with the stain applied to show the difference.

I applied it liberally, let it soak in and then wiped off the excess. Pretty nice figure in some of these boards, the stain made it pop.

It'll get 2 coats of spar polyurethane top and bottom.

 

is that just glue? Or do you use biscuits or dominoes or anything?

 

I’m just gonna say that’s damn fine and a super idea. My plastic tables aren’t cracked but are stained beyond recognition

 

Just tite bond 3 glue. But it will have some stringers attached to the bottom to keep it flat. I'm not worried about how it will fair being outside since I keep it covered and 2 coats of spar varnish will seal it up well.

 

Came home from work and put the first coat of spar varnish on the bottom. The soft maple is soaking it up like a sponge, not so much with the hard maple in the center.
This is wet.

 

I glued up a couple of panels made of Alder today for a new project. I used my new Domino. It made it much easier to get it and keep it flat.

 

The Domino is freakin awesome!

Then again, so is everything else I’ve bought from them.

Yeah I would love to have a domino but man they are expensive.

 

It's funny cause I wouldn't bat an eye at 1100 on my truck, a new gun, a new bow, or elk tags.... but busting out that kind of dough for a tool I almost immediately "nope" in my head

 

I'd looked at Festool stuff for years at Woodcraft and shook my head at the ridiculous prices.

Then a friend helped me with a project using his Domino.
2 years later... I could have added sliders, full skids, a lid, new rims and 35s to my truck, but no... My workshop is full of amazingly wonderful green tools that are pure joy to use.

Either option is good, the Festool craze hit my a few months before the Taco Upgrade urge, so Festool won out.
