I wonder what was done to the neighbor relationships! We had many calcium carbide cannons in HS (makes acetylene gas when exposed to water for those wondering. Used in old miners lamps) that we ‘deployed’ every July 4th. 4” sewer grade PVC pipe , 4 feet long, with a coffee can cemented on the bottom! Complete with coat hanger re-bar through the pipe! That fucker sounded like a 5 inch gun going off and the flame that it produced was a wonder to behold at night! Shot tennis balls taped up tight with newspaper and electrical tape. After the first year, everyone came down to our cul de sac to party and blow shit up.

 

My dad hit me a few times. At some point I realized he was drunk and just doing what was done to him as a child; he just didn't know any other way to deal with things. He was also not malicious - just frustrated and outta options in his mind.

My mom [the sober one] was malicious - being severely emotionally abusive to him, to me. I got a job as soon as I could and worked 40hr a week while in HS - all so I could *not* be at home, then moved away for college. It became too much for my dad to endure - -

To this day, she won't stop - she can't just be nice or STFU . . . I can't have a relationship with someone who just wants to tear me down 100% of the time.

 

My Dad (same deal - doing what he learned as a kid) quit hitting us when 6' tall 13 yo me pinned him against a wall and told him "you're not hittin' us anymore."
Glad I took after my maternal grandfather size wise. Like Will , I graduated HS and basically ranaway from home to join the Air Force.

 

The last time he did it, I was 14; I boycotted family dinner for two weeks till he figured out why I was so pissed off at him.
I was more mad that my mom just watched it happen and did nothing except make excuses - for someone who hated his drinking, she would excuse it when it was convenient for her; fuck me and my brother.

The running away thing seems to be the best/only option we really had.
My job was something they couldn't argue with; I left and went to college as soon as I could.
My brother went the military route [Navy] but did ROTC in college first, had them eat the bill and went in as an officer. He is clever when he wants to be.

Well, here it's the adults acting like dumbasses. They blow up shit constantly, debris everywhere, burn marks on our vehicles from shit landing on them and my dog freaks out like he has ptsd from a past life. So unfortunately we hate this holiday more than any other....I hope to not have any neighbors next time I move.

Seems we could have a club here…. Horrible alcoholic dad and dry drunk of a step dad. Was scared of my real dad for and reasons. Didn’t end up seeing him much…… not a bad thing. I was the baby of the family so I don’t have some good memories of him sprinkled in there like my older sisters do
