I am sure this has been asked but...what do you think about truck driving as a career change? I am 43 with a wife and pre teen daughter. My fear is having to start as an OTR driver and missing the family. Any advice/opinions would be helpful. Thanks

What are you doing now? Be looking at city/county jobs. All those food service guys (sysco,fsa,etc...) plenty of hours and home every night.

Old dominion has a pretty good reputation. I would definitely give them a look if they have a hub in your area.

Well vacation over. Back to work. 3 days of one day, work one day off one day then work 3. Lol. I can live with that.

Just enough to look kinda cool.
There are a lot of “local” jobs that have you home every night. I recommend hauling dirt (I might be biased) but you can drive truck without being OTR.

The only thing I'll add to this conversation is most companies want you to have some experience and that usually means otr. But sometimes when all the planets are in alignment you can get with a company that will traine you. Old dominion comes to mind. And there may be others.

Small lift, slightly oversized tires, well...
Well, here I sit...at the shop...Linehaul driver broke his key off in the ignition and left it for me to take it in. Office says hook to your trailer and get it fixed on your way out. They didn't want a trailer hooked to the tractor, so take it to their yard and drop it. At least I get paid hourly and my deliveries are pretty light today, so it shouldn't screw my day up too bad.

Lots of options, dump truck, ready mix, trash, food delivery, etc………. Depends on what you’re interested in. Don’t want physical work, stay away from the food industry. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Someone has probably done what your looking at and can give you pros and cons .

Everyone is different . How does the wife and daughter feel about the move??

Things are so different now Companies closing others begging for help.

In my area here I would not want to drive commercial at this time.

The late seventies was completely different.

Ugh. Got stuck in like an hours worth of traffic heading back south on I5. Had to force some dumb fucks to let me in to the exit lane so i could get around it. Tried being polite and let my turn signal go for a bit but said fuck em after awhile. I wouldve beaten my time by a little bit even with 2 more stops than last time.

Then got stuck again on my way home.
    Its beer o clock rn.

Only need the DOT stuff if i cross state lines. At least thats how my boss explained it.
