lockers or winch?

Alright. So I have a 4x4 Sr5 and I do small time trail riding and stuff but am debating on weather lockers would do me better or a winch for those few times I get stuck. And I should specify this my daily driver so a luchbox locker is not really an option for me, was looking at arb. Just want to see what yall think is money better spent. Thanks!

 

i say locker..............with a winch......you gotta have a place to mount it. and arb makes some awesome air lockers.

 

well they are both good, a winch will always get you out if theres something near by, a locker wont, but like tacoman said you need a place to mount it. i would go with a locker cause i rarely get stuck anyways.. but up to you!

 

It really depends on how bad you get stuck and what type of terrain you will be mostly on.

One reason I went with a winch for now, is because it is cheaper and it can get you unstuck in certain cases where lockers would not.

Lockers are nice because it's a lot easier to get unstuck instead of needing to pull out the winch line and do all that.

 

would the locker have helped you the few times u were stuck?

 

I've been stuck in rocks and the lockers would definitely have helped most times.

I've been stuck in very slick shallow mud trying to go uphill and the lockers would not have helped. (I know this because it happened with my 06 TRD OR with rear locker.) I definitely needed a winch. It almost caused me to slide sideways off the trail and down a steep ravine . I had to get winched out by another vehicle.

 

I would say winch..... you can get yourself out and others out....

 

well, what are you going to do when you get stuck after you install the locker?

 

I have done a lot of four wheeling... in my 3 Tacomas (all with a rear locker), I have NEVER needed to be winched... The locker adds the traction or lowering air pressure in the tires increases the traction.

Lockers (as in front and back) would be even more reason not to get stuck.

I would rather spend money to keep from getting stuck than to buy something because I know I will get stuck.

Next time, get the Off Road TRD 4WD! Stuck? Doesn't know the word!

 

IMHO this is the best advice you can get. Look at your situations and what is most needed and what your money will allow. But keep this statement in mind.

 

I went for the Winch first. You can get stuck no matter how many traction devices you have. A winch can always pull you through to the other side.

 

I have always gotten myself out of any situation... Where I go four wheeling there are neither people to help nor trees to winch onto usually.

Includes the couple of bad stucks I got into, before my Tacomas.

You just have to figure a way out... Lowering the tire pressure is often the solution. Sand, snow, riverbottom... I was stuck in a rising flash flood arroyo in Baja once, in my Subaru 4WD wagon (1978)... Tires were under water, but before it poured into doorways, I thought of lowering the air pressure... and it worked!

Once when I was sunk in yuk mud on a tidal salt/ mud flat (accidentally got off the firm track across it to the beach, at night. Slept in vehicle and next morning I walked and found some wood. Jacked up my vehicle and placed the wood under the tires... That stuck was the longest... and there are no trees on a mud flat next to an ocean lagoon to attach a winch cable to.

The only problem with lockers is when you get stuck you're really stuck. I'd get gear that gets you out of situatations before you get gear that gets you into situations.

I have always wheeled on the premise of, only in 4WD if I'm not moving in 2WD.

 

I don't have any personal experience/advice on this but like others have said maybe try to get both? If not maybe locker first then winch soon after? I say locker first only because you don't have a traction device already so see where just a locker can get you.

I hunt alone.... i have to go offroading to get there.... am i stupid?
