I ran a 15.5sec 1/4mi at the track at 1K mi on a 3" lift and stock tires. I have the time slips.

Feels significant faster after the kdmax tune too.

Another +1 for a tune. The OTT time I got on my 2019 was a game changer…lots of giddy-up without having to mash on the gas pedal…

Toyota historically puts underwhelming engines in their trucks, namely the Tacoma. Why they do that I don't know because the Tundras are properly powered. Tacoma's short of a supercharger are less than impressive though. It's almost insult considering how much these stupid trucks cost.

    This right here. Lol.

The 4.0 had all the low end torque where you actually needed it for a truck

Idk where you are located but this guy does a great job answering questions. That's where I got my tune from, and my mpg actually increased with better performance all around.

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/burlington-vermont-authorized-kdmax-tuner.764773/

If you're not in that area or not planning a trip, there's other KDMaxx authorized tuners all across the country.

I've owned 6 Toyota trucks since the early 80's, all MT's. The second gen 4.0 MT had the most torque from the factory. The 3.5 is lethargic up to 3000rpm with the factory tune. It's a shame Toyota didn't tune the 3.5 to get the most out of it. I chose the OTT tune for mine. It made a big difference. It's reminiscent of the 4.0 now. MPG's stayed the same too.

Seems some 3.5's perform worse than others. Mine performs very close to the 4.7 tundra I had, making decent power just under 2k rpm. It's quite a bit stronger than my tundra on top. Really nothing to complain about, its just an all-around well made truck.

Mine is pretty good too. It'll easily take my '16 2500hd 6.0L. This isn't saying much as everybody used to complain how much of a dog the Chevy 6.0 was on the Silverado/Sierra forums. It's also quite easy to chirp the tires in second if I'm driving somewhat aggressively. I'm happy with mine, too bad most everybody else has such a shitter.

i’d driven a 2.7 it sounded like a ticking time bomb going up a small incline, i saw a good deal on offer up for a 4.0 and i test drove it , the truck has plenty of power. I decided to pass on it because it had way to much body work that needed to be done. My 3.5 runs like crap on the streets but in the freeway its fast so i dont know what the fuss is about?
Yes theres times i wish it was faster but at the end of the day its a truck(with a mini van engine) :anonymous:

My favorite posts always compare back to the 4.slow. As if it is some sort of massive change between the two motors.

some people will tell you one piss beer is massively better than another. Like Bush light is really that different from Coors Light ? GTFO

Dear god. My wifes 3.3 Caravan had more get-up-and-go than my truck does (below 4000), I wouldn't even think of comparing it to a V8 of any sort. This is really annoying with the manual especially in the 2-3 range and things like curved on-ramps or other traffic, its either keep the engine spinning over 4k in 2nd so you can accelerate later, or downshift from 3rd to 4500 rpm in 2nd so you can get going. The number of times I have tried to accelerate in 3rd and there is just nothing there is frustrating, it is only useful if you ran 2nd to redline and then you are at 60mph anyways.

Yeah, it makes pretty good power above 4000 RPM, but you can only use that in 1st or 2nd, maybe 3rd if you are really cooking it on the highway.

The worst part is that it "feels" like there is more there. Occasionally cruising around in 5th at say 45-50 mph I can lightly push on the throttle and be surprised by how responsive and torque-y it feels, but then ACTUALLY ask for any power and it falls flat on its face. And then the shudder whenever you roll into or off the throttle.

All my rigs are purpose built. From crawling to camping. I also enjoy a nice stock truck for what that’s worth. Toyota’s are the jam!
Yeah man, all of us have felt the same moving from previous gen trucks, these muthas want you to hit the gas before you get any power. I will say that a tune helped out the trans stop shifting too early and it now holds gears way better.
Out of all the mods I have done, that helped the most. But then again I have a 2017, so I they may have worked on that a little.
