Set everything flat. If it still sounds bad, check the speakers. 13 YO OEM speakers could be blown.

I'll snag a picture later this evening. But the main things I had to turn off were the 3D Surround Sound setting, which for me was on by default and seemed like it muted the volume quite a bit for certain speakers. Turned it off and volume output seemed to normalize

I just installed this unit...sound is amazing. I have the OEM Audio+ and that all works fine, etc. I do have three issues which I am sure two are user error and the third I need to just wire:
    1. I can't change the steering wheel controls. I can see the set up on the screen, but get a flashing note to push "the" button on the steering wheel to enter set up. I do that and nothing. Joying mentioned a specific wired link that I think I need.

    2. Apple Car Play doesn't start up. Can't see how to get it to start at all. User Error I am sure...but, any insights? I can use Bluetooth audio, make calls but can't see Car Play at all. Car Play on my iPhone shows the head unit, but tells me to push the voice activation button on the steering wheel to add the head unit, so maybe I need #1 solved first?

    3. The rear back up camera isn't working. When I go into reverse, the screen takes a second or so, then shows the guidance lines but no camera visual. There is an RCA cable on the Joying harness labeled Rear Camera, but nowhere to plug it into the truck...so either another plug is needed or simply the wiring hack others have done.

I am may try to get the brackets to work as others have done just for additional security. The stock stereo fought me on one of the bolts with the nut spinning out of the plastic. It is toast...but I will work through that.

This thread is invaluable!! Any ideas on what I am missing would be greatly appreciated from those who have successfully set this up. Thanks.

Ok so I only know one out of the three problems, the Apple car play. There's an app called “car link 2.0” on the head unit. This is the apple car play app. I wasn’t trynna have to mess with all the Bluetooth stuff so plugged in a female/ male usb cord and ran it down to a blank and dremeled it out. Them plugged a lighting cable to iPhone. U can just plug a phone cord into the back and run it down but I wanted it to look stock as possible. I’ll post pics when I figure how.

BBH, that looks great! Also, will look at the Car Link. I opened it but didn’t spend much time in it. Thanks!

Quick update. Have the Car Play working thanks to BamaBigHoss. I also figured out the back up camera. I was reading another thread and realized I needed to plug two RCA cables together, with several options depending on how many pin connector my original radio used.

I heard back from Joying on the steering wheel controls…they sent some additional instructions. There are three plugs, CAN In, CAN Out and Key. Mine came with CAN in and Key plugged in together. I read another thread show that config as correct. Joying is saying to connect the CAN In to the CAN Out which makes sense. This worked perfectly, didn’t even have to map.

Also, my dash is still apart so I will get some pics of the back up camera cable connections and SWC connection if works.

I think this kind of variation shows how truck variation impacts install…throw in light duty instructions and a dab of user error and it creates a puzzle. I am lucky in that my Tacoma is a second vehicle, so leaving it in pieces doesn’t create stress. As a primary vehicle, sorting some of this out would be a bit stressful!

If you get the correct connection it works. On my unit only one is signal the other 2 are power only.

TL;DR the JOYING was a good purchase.

Finally got around to installing this 9" Joying unit. It was much easier than I expected. Everything went as-planned, no cutting or splicing needed. I don't have a backup cam at present so no issue there. CarPlay works fine with iOS 16.5.1, although only with the Joying as the WiFi tether source. The iPhone is smart enough to realize that the Joying's Wifi network has no internet connection, so the phone continues to use 4G/LTE cellular to get data for GoogleMaps navigation.

I tried to use the stock/OEM mounting brackets but they didn't seem to quite fit, maybe I need to modify them slightly. The 5 plastic snap-in mounting tabs are adequate but I'd prefer to have the metal bolt-down brackets back in place with the Joying if possible.

All in all a massive & worthwhile upgrade over the stock 2014 AC non-JBL head unit. I already had some nice speakers, sub, and amp installed; the Joying unit takes these to the next level of refinement and clarity.

I need to both A) see if there are any updates from Joying and B) reinstall the Joying supplied GPS receiver. I'm using the factory Jeep GPS receiver with the adapter to connect it to the Joying receiver (even though YES, Joying says specifically not to do this..). For about a year it was working fine, but the last few weeks, my GPS has been all over the place! Rerouting me so many times because it thinks I'm on a different road a block over, I've had to just stop using it for now.

So, my factory head unit is about dead. When it gets hot, it makes the most annoying squealing noise until I turn it off and drive silently.

I'm not the most audio-ly gifted person, but I think I understand about the above head unit:
Buy the cables and it's plug and play.
    Steering wheel controls work.
    Back up camera works.
I can add front camera if I want to. (...which one do I need to buy?)
Wireless iphone carplay works if I want it to (or I can do bluetooth only because I'm old and like the way google maps displays on my phone).

    ...yes?

And are y'all buying direct or from Amazon?

I have the 11.6" in my jeep. Using it, you could probably get away with using your factory headunit bezel. The screen is adjustable, so you can just mess with the height of it until you like the positioning.
