On one side of it, I can just keep it and use it as I always have. And still buy a crawler to play with.

In my mind I just think of it as...if I ain't going to wheel it, why not have a comfortable daily. I appreciate the room, and solid old-school feel of it. And like I was telling Zane I was stupidly surprised with the lunchbox locker after only ever having electronic rear lockers.

On the flip side, a comfortable daily would keep me from wanting to spend any money on it.

So yeah if I keep the LC, I'm tempted to buy some taller coils for a lift, bushings for needed caster, and take care of some of its leaks.

I’ve been following this series where they’re fixing up an old 80 series. It looks like the tools you’d have buy to go through everything yourself would be almost as much as the labor at a mechanic! Lots of specialised tools you’d only use once or twice.

When I say comfy daily, I mean family sized cause of Theo.

    Not a car, I got 2 Corvettes I don't drive already :anonymous:

You can rent a lot of tools though.
I haven't watched that, but just as a general rule if its something I'm gonna use once or twice, I try to rent.
Besides they're in the land of the Land Cruiser, shouldnt be too hard to find secondhand tools or people willing to lend ya one if needed.

    That's what I figured.
I was talking to a friend about this yesterday because he was looking at a XC90. We were just talking about what you'd do if you wanted something comfortable and well built, maybe leaning a little bit into luxury but not full on, that's also reliable, can fit enough crap in it and is good for road trips and daily. The outliers would be anything that would also be decent if you went off pavement a bit. (lightly)

@Kwikvette P.S. - Are you hanging onto the 'vettes just because you love 'em or they're sentimental etc? (which I fully understand) Seems like some money sitting there if not....

Tools make many jobs easy for sure, but sometimes the specialty tools you see often are those that -

are meant to service an item, rather than replace it for instance the clamp to hold the gear on a power steering pump when you take it apart to rebuild

or an offset seal driver, cause a regular one works but the offset just gives you peace of mind you did it at a specified depth, etc

Not all specialty tools are required, and sometimes those that work on their rigs already have a tool that works well as an alternative.

We were joking about this recently how Zane had to use a crows foot on something, yet I haven't messed with my set since replacing an oil line to my Focus ST. I had a larger turbo and a ton of other mods I did to it and the aftermarket oil line started leaking and a crow's foot is the only thing that worked to remove and replace it.

Had taken this pic to send to Edgeautosport to show them the bad line, they overnighted me one right back.

    The turbo that went in.

    After install.

The old one that came out.

My initial numbers when I was tuning it on the dyno. That was before meth injection and only on 91 octane. Had her running upwards of 360whp on E85 and meth.

    Sounds like you’re describing a 100 series.

I need to replace the rear end on the Z, and get new half shafts but yeah that one blew after many launches at the strip.

The other one is more sentimental, and I'll never get my money out of it. Mainly cause it's on a platform not many like (C4) and the powertrain is worth more than the car (4 bolt main 383 and performabuilt tranny).

The C4 I got after my first tour back in 2006.

    @01x4

What are you ultimately deciding on? You've been on the fence for awhile now.

They seem kinda small compared to the new Sequoia. Those things look like a school bus.

They seem to hold up pretty well though. The 98-02s can still be decent value too.

    Oh for sure

But you're also comparing it to a newer vehicle, that's much more ($65k and up)

Newer vehicles are just so much bigger

People in the US are just getting too fat, so need to accommodate them somehow

Yeah...that's what I'm checking out for a second time tomorrow.

I don't ever buy or trade a car the same day I see it. I like to fully assess it before making a decision.

Second visit is usually pick up unless it was something cheap and going fast then I show up fully intending to walk away with right then and there.

A GX460 might be the way to go. I do prefer the simplicity of the old UZ though. I’ve heard of cam tower leaks and bad radiators on the URs, as well as just more complex repairs overall.

470 that's had a wonderful life and is full of maintenance done (preventative as well).

Even the air suspension works

Like Zane said, a V8 4R that wastes more gas.

It's comfy AF though and super clean.

But yeah I never do anything on impulse as you can easily make a decision you'll regret soon after.

Seen that too often being in the car business.
