True story…Way back in the day, when my son was just knee-high to a jackrabbit, we were living in a trailer park. I went to pay the rent one day and the landlady told me it was 25% off this month. I asked her why. She said because my little boy made her smile for a week. She was walking out to check her mail and my son was on the swing singing little red riding hood. He was like 5 years old. :D

    1) The vast majority of people absolutely suck with a handgun... they just don't know it.
Not everybody can be an Elmer Keith.
(Points if youse guys know who he was).

I suck too, though I wasn't too horrible with my Taurus PT-92 clone of the early pattern Beretta 92.
It fit my hand well, and I'm convinced that's a very important factor.
Of course I sold it

... and I've had NRA handgun courses and mucho practice.

I've shot with my retired policeman buddies at the Club and they weren't any better than me.

So points to you for not kidding yourself

    2) Agree on triggers.

I can just about handle a hammer double/ single action pistol or a revolver without flinching... in single action (cocked).
But the trigger on a striker fired handgun?
    No thanks.

After the first hundred thousand rounds or so at Trap, I had to go to a release trigger.
You call it "target panic", trapshooters call it "flinching".

@Squirt , your time will come if you shoot enough... and can afford that much shooting

    3) I sympathize.
But shooting one-eyed with a handgun is not a very big disadvantage.
A slight squint with the offside eye may be all that's needed.

It is when shooting trap, though some good shooters have overcome the disadvantage.

I don't have strong dominance in either eye, and it used to trip me up.

Diagnosing cross dominance involves pointing the firearm at the target instinctively, both eyes open.
Close one eye, repeat with the other eye.
If the target lines up with your offside eye, you have a problem.

    You have four options:
Learn to shoot off the dominant side if you're strongly cross dominant (I'm not)
    or
Shoot one eyed (bad for peripheral vision and depth perception)
    or
Put a translucent dot on your shooting glasses (the correct answer)
    or
    Continue to suck.

Correct placement involves putting on your shooting glasses and mounting the gun as you normally would
... and having a friend look down your sights from the muzzle end
... lining up your sights/ beads with the pupil of your eye and marking a dot at the center (of the pupil) on the lens with a Sharpie.
Then cover the dot with a 3/8" circle (more or less, depending) of scotch tape.
(A washer and an Xacto knife works perfectly to cut a nice round dot).

The smaller the dot, the better your peripheral vision and depth perception.
You can go too small however, because no one can mount his firearm exactly the same way, repeatedly.

    How it works:

You see the moving target and move the gun in response.
Your peripheral vision and depth perception are working for you.
As your front bead closes in on the target, your cross dominant eye is obscured by the translucent dot.
... forcing the other eye to take over.

    My shooting glasses:

    20230630_193728.jpg

Why is the dot placed so high on the lens? (I hear you asking)
Because one's head needs to be firmly down on the comb of a trapgun to maintain bead alignment.
    You're looking slightly upward.

    Hey @Squirt

You're welcome, and I hope you paid attention :)
