Goo gone vs rubbing alcohol for debadge?

Another one recommending 3M general purpose adhesive remover. Great for removing tar/bugs from your finish as well. No garage should be without a can.

 

I have never liked the stickers manufacturers put on the sides of the beds on 4x4 trucks, I think they look gaudy. When I used to order gm products (my Dad worked there) I would get them without stickers. Seeing as we can't order Tacomas I had no choice in the matter. But with a little research, I can take the damn things off!

PPG used to have a really good solvent that was paint friendly for removing badge adhesive. But I think they gave it a new part number and used the older one for something else. Will give this 3M stuff a try.

 

It is kind of like leaving the dealer license plate frame on your truck. First thing that got tossed was that and the two tacoma door badges along with the 4x4 on the tail gate. At some point the TRD Sport decal on both sides of the bed will be coming off too.

 

Use goo gone, then follow up with a hand polish and wax (or DA) and blend that shine in. I’ve always had issues with shadow effects that I had to blend the finish because the decal had been on for years

I used to have access to a solvent called “Magic Clean” or however you spell it, we used it at the dealers on new cars for removing badge residue for new cars people wanted them off, and for removing white and yellow paint from new road work

strong stuff that works way better than goo gone without the residue, just hella flammable

 

Pictures finally, I've been too busy lately. I parked in the hot sun and the decals peeled off in one piece pretty easily. 3 M adhesive remover and a microfiber towel took care of the leftover residue very quickly. The hardest part was making sure I got all the edges of the adhesive off as the straight lines tried to stay on the paint. After a light shined from several directions showed that I got every speck of it off I cleaned the area with Dawn & water spray, then a couple coats of wax.

Like they were never even there! I'm happy! Also I want to add I like the Tacoma badges, I have just never liked the stickers they put on the sides of truck boxes. Any of them.

 

I've use Goo Gone before and it's more to clean while you're already trying to clean something. This product works very well.

 

I've always just used WD40 lol.

 

Using a heat gun or hair dryer for the initial pull will help the adhesive come off with the decal, instead of the adhesive being left behind.

For the adhesive left behind the absolute best is 3M adhesive remover.

If you ONLY have isopropyl alcohol, I prefer that over Goo Gone, mainly because Goo Gone leaves a residue which isn't ideal when applying the new decal.

Put the alcohol on soft rag- Don't spray or dump it directly onto the clear coat. Just a precaution, but you don't want to soften your topcoat.

 

Some swear by Goo Gone but I don't know why, as it basically removes one mess just to create another.

 

Peanut butter. Works good, on glass & more sensitive or delicate items. Bought a picture at Art Gallery & had sticker on it & lady pulled out Creamy PB & the oils in took it off.

 

Put your dog(s) in the bed afterwards for a nice clean finish!

 

Eraser wheels make quick work of a debadge. Saves a lot of scrubbing
