Correction: This factory upgrade does NOT support Android Auto only Apple Carplay. I responded to a previous poster and unknowingly gave him false information. I do apologize.

 

I went from a 2016 non-JBL, nav unit, to a 2020 "nav unit" 86140-04230. I installed it using the harness from AutoHarnessHouse.
Does anyone know if that separate box attached under the HU from a 2016 (part number 86180-0e011) is all that would be needed to get back the in-dash "Now Playing", Compass, etc?

 

Probably not. That's a 2.0 unit. The 2020 unit is 3.0

 

You bought the wrong head unit. That head unit doesn’t have factory navigation and apple car play.
The HU you needed was 86140-04200. If you had factory navigation with your original unit, this 04200 is the only one that will work (non JBL). I have had a lot of experience with this if you need any further help. If you have OCD like me, sell or return that unit and Brian from auto harness house can either sell you the correct wire or modify your harness from him for a small fee. He’s a great knowledgeable guy.

People advertise it as having Navi but that is incorrect. There is one on eBay for 600 plus shipping. He listed it with the wrong part number. But when you examine the pictures it’s the one you want, just have them confirm the part number. Hope this helps. And yes this is the only way to get everything working as it did.

 

That’s not a bad price. Usually people want 900 plus. I made the same mistake as you and learned from it.

 

Well, it is what it is I suppose. I’m not that OCD but it was nagging question in the back of my head.

I appreciate the knowledge on what the correct part number is, because who knows, maybe one day I will become OCD enough to do all of it the right way.

Only 04200 has Carplay, Android Auto AND Navigation?

 

04200 has the navigation.( non JBL) 04230 is the same but without. All the others I am unsure of. I would guess that all are different iterations of screen size, JBL/ non JBL and NAVI/ WO NAVI

 

04200 is the bigger screen, non JBL and factory navigation. That’s the only one that will give you all your options if you have factory Navi and doing the HU swap and want the bigger screen. That’s what I had to use on my TRDPRO

 

I’m new to the forum and a new owner 2019 Tacoma. I want a non-JBL factory radio that integrates with steering wheel song selection and volume control and I want ApplePlay. I think from your previous posts, that I need 86140-4200. And believe I have the smaller radio bezel which will only accommodate a smaller radio? Does this make sense?

I think the model number I need I need is 86140-4210?

just not sure and it can be an expensive mess if I don’t get it right… OCD as well…

 

Do the CP / AA units give you CP / AA information in the center information screen (ie Waze GPS stuff) or is it only the Entune info.

I have an aftermarket CP / AA module in my truck that gives me CP on my Entune 2.0 which works very okayish outside of some wonky audio quality so I tend to use Entune more. I'm not really in any position to do a shift, but I'd be curious as I like the GPS info in the cluster.

 

What model Tacoma do you have? From this I believe I can discern if you have GPS and the size of your bezel as I think the base models have a smaller bezel and no GPS

 

It's only Entune stuff and that's Only if you had GPS to begin with. It shows what road your on. There's a compass. MAybe some other GPS stuff I can't think of like distances.

I'm an Apple fan and wish my '17 Taco came with it. But having no issues with my Entune, as it does everything I want it too, I'm curious what CarPlay would give me over my Entune?

Bluetooth for Music & Phone
Steering Wheel controls
Subwoofer controls
Single CD player
USB music input

 

It’s just an easier and always up to date interface. Do you have your phone up and clipped to the dash at all? I like having always up to date navigation mapping for free. Waze is a great mapping app that alerts you to police and potential road obstacles. Podcasts and music streaming access is easier than flipping audio inputs back and forth. Talk to text is easier than the entune texting system. If your system does everything you want, no need to change.
