The Blackbird was my fav as a kid growing up; I remember being super stoked when I got a die cast model of it as a kid for secret santa.

I need to go out to Palmdale one of these days where they have one on display. I've seen the A-12 (original CIA version of the SR) they have displayed at the CA Science Center though, it's kind of weird how small it looks on person. But the A-12 was a bit smaller than the SR71

I just love the backstory on how we tricked the USSR into supplying us with the titanium we needed to build the planes we used to spy on them for 3 decades

 

Awe man I'd love to see one on display, even the A-12 would be badass

There is also one on display in Riverside at March Air Force Base. Not sure what version it is.

 

Still? That was a thing last year, didn't realize it was ongoing. That sucks, I love their chili paste.

I saw the SR-71 on display at Barksdale AFB in 2004 when I was a kid. They’d just moved it there from the final cancellation of the SR-71 program. Instead of transferring it to NASA.

 

Air Force cancelled it in the early to mid 90s, NASA flew it until it's last flight in 1999. I wish they'd have kept it going though, even just for research. Still the fastest air breathing aircraft (that we know of) to this day.

From what I've read it was obscenely expensive to operate so it makes sense unfortunately why it was cancelled across the board.. with the use of satellites and drones for reconnaissance. But still I'd love to see that thing fly in person

The U2 spy plane is even older than the SR71 and is still in use today, but it's basically a paper airplane in comparison to the Blackbird cost wise

 

If you aren't already you should follow the page Habubrats on FB, it's a pretty active SR71 themed group run by the daughter of a famed Blackbird pilot.

Lot of cool info posted on there, just have to ignore some of the political bs like usual with FB. But a lot of the stories and photos are really interesting.

 

A good friend and fellow Tacoma has had his business has been broken into twice in the past 60 days. The robbers just get phone cases and accessories that are on display as the real phone are kept in a safe. He has decoys (fake phones) behind the counter so the robbers think they are getting something valuable. I hope he has some type of tracking device on the decoy phones. It sucks to see a good guy's business disrupted like this.
