And why do they require it only on an unmodified stock intake and exhaust? Does putting a CAI and Cat-Back on an OTT create Nuclear Fission levels of power?

OTT here on 22trdor, love it. Im sure KD tune is just as good. Its more a tranny tune vs engine tune. Sure you gain some HP/TQ but upgrade to trans is most felt

Looks like two of the tunes are making less power than stock across most of the rpm band.

Do any of the other tuners provide the same Dyno data? I only ever see butt dyno claims of 3rd gens popping wheelies and beating raptors light to light after getting tuned.:notsure:

    I read all of it.
And the question I’m left with is?

What is the dip in HP/TQ between 3,500-4,000 RPM?
What’s happening here to cause the dip?
Are the intake runner flaps moving?

As one can tell, I’m not concerning with the “tunes” and who is “better”.

I’ve wondered the same thing. Could be intake runners, valve timing, a switch from direct to port…. I’d be interested to know.

The dip you're referring to is the ACIS system (intake runner flap) creating a turbulence/disturbance in the plenum that affects the resonance tuning gains the system generates. It's a byproduct of how Toyota designed the plenum on this platform. Taking advantage of the longer runners the system creates, tunes the intake system to produce power at lower RPM ranges in comparison to shorter intake runners which are tuned to frequencies more conducive to high RPM output. The crossover point or where the ACIS system crosses over from long runner to short runner mode will suffer a dip on this application unless it's moved to a point low enough in the RPM range where the system is not yet improved the VE of the engine enough to make an appreciable difference in the torque. This can be offset by other methods to boost torque (increasing ignition advance), but the VE improvements of the ACIS system cannot be matched by changing cam timing, increasing ignition timing, or through AFR tweaks. Toyota knew this and it's been in use on various Toyota engines for quite some time through various names (TVIS, ACIS, etc).

I had a suspicion that’s what it was.
I do believe there were tests done on the 1GR with the runners pinned open and closed.
The conclusion was, leaving the runners active resulted in better numbers over all.

    Thanks for the reply.
I have to give you credit. You are always willing to answer my questions.

On a N/A truck, we've not observed any measurable (on the dyno) gains to be had by even changing the OEM air filter up to 400whp. At 360whp the stock catback was removed and we noted 8whp improvement. At the typical 250whp of a stock-ish 3G Tacoma, there really is no performance gain to be had with a cat-back exhaust, thus we don't recommend anyone change them until they approach power levels that warrant an improvement.

That's correct. @Torspd had done this testing on the 1GR. The design of that intake manifold (thankfully) doesn't create the disturbance that is found in the 2GR-FKS manifold.

Loving my premium SFOB on 94E0, truck drives amazing on it. Plenty of power/Tq below 3k RPMs.

I haven’t tried any other tunes.

I have seen this mentioned a few times around here, but what is “SFOB” exactly? I am not really interested in modding my truck to hell (or really at all), but the gutless low end when I am actually doing Truck Stuff™ has me thinking about ditching it for an AT, 4G, or something else entirely.

2LM could be handy in-between, but that’s only useful in some scenarios; albeit those scenarios are when the torque is needed the most.

SFOB = super full Ottocycle Beta. Manual only tune, it’s fantastic man. It feels like it adds about 30% more torque down low, none of this Atkinson cycle BS.

2Low is a lifesaver if towing anything and even just backing up steep inclines unleaden. Also can be useful to crawl in 1st in super slow traffic.

"THIS". Best mod I've done. The torque down low is similar to my 2nd gen 4.0 MT now. MPG's stayed the same and the engine is a lot quieter too.

    For MT's it is.
