Is it possible to ruin a 2009's brakes in 9,000 miles?

So I just bought a 2009 double cab TRD 4x4 with 9,200 miles. There are tell-tale signs that the 1 previous owner towed with it. Holes in the right side cubby where he had a trailer-brake mounted. Some damage to the tailgate where he forgot to use the backup cam to align his hitch. But its the brakes that concern me a tad. Now I haven't taken the wheels off yet to inspect. But the pedal feels firm, hard and flat with only about 2-3" of travel. I am new to tacomas and don't have anything to compare to. But much different from my '08 Tundra I traded in to get this.

The truck stops ok but the pedal just doesn't feel right to me. Especially for a truck with only 9,000 miles on it. Fluid resevoir is fine. I guess I'm happy it seems he was using a trailer brake. So I guess the question is....can you fry a Tacomas brakes (pads, or rotors, or calipers) in only 9,000 miles??

You should get 60-70k out of them.

 

I would change the fluid out and bleed the brake system then address any issues after that.

 

It is the TRD Offroad, not the Sport.

 

Let me tell you my "motto" I've rather loose with a smart, guy, partner, etc.
than win with an idiot. I run away when I see them on highway, I do not do business with them, nothing. And if I see a truck with the rear gate banged from neglect, stupidity, etc., I don't need that truck. (9000 miles with bad breaks?), How about the engine? Did he ever changed that oil? did he pull a 6000 lb trailer next day after he purchased the truck new? Not me.

Well I didn't really put everything together until after I bought the truck. Bad on me. I was given such a good deal on it ($26K) vs booking at $32K I probably jumped the gun on it. But it is hard loaded and otherwise mint. And the damage to the tailgate is just some light scratching. And the engine looks and feels great. So maybe i goofed. Or maybe not. I dunno, the brakes just don't feel right to me.

Naahhhh your probably fine. Just take it into the shop and have a mechanic take a look.

 

Prolly fine. Have mechanic check it at your 10k oil change.

And 26K isn't unusually low for a 2 year old truck. So you don't need to be "looking" for something to be wrong with it.

Also, if you search TW, you'll find lots of 2nd gen owners griping about "spongy" brake feel that turns out to be normal, if not exactly desirable.

 

Go test drive some brand new trucks and see how those feel. I highly doubt you can fry brakes in 9k. Highly doubt. Also if it only has 9K miles that truck should still be under warranty. Take that bastard in and have them look and fix if need be.
