    Nah, I have a 2015 TRDOR.

He asked a question. Personally I'd always take the 4.0 over the 3.5 myself if a new 3rd gen offered both.

I was looking in late 2015 but I have never [barring one horrible mistake I dumped very quickly] bought a first year for a generation vehicle. It's not even a matter of make or model, it's just that they all are so complicated that there tends to be far more issues initially and by the end of a run, the bugs have all been worked out pretty well.

A well kept secret is the recent U.S. release of the Hilux EV. 2 and 4wd, stereo, seats 2... IMO, it's literally the best EV on the market, which isn't saying much. upload_2023-7-3_15-30-26.jpg upload_2023-7-3_15-31-5.jpg

Sorry, that was a rhetorical question.

Wife has a 21 4Runner and I have a 21 Tacoma. I actually prefer the 3.5 in the Tacoma to the 4.0 in the 4Runner.

Same. The 4.0 is NOT special. You want to get sentimental over a Toyota engine, go for the 5.7.

I liked the old straight 6 banger myself. You could keep those running with shoestrings and chewing gum. Had a distributor bushing go out once so I stuck a piece of wood between the block and the distributor and knocked it in enough to get my butt back home to replace it.

And I did like the 4 popper in my 1984.

You guys probably prefer the 1000 lbs less curb weight more than engine choice.

4R is a fat pig compared to any Taco; it needed the dual VVT 4.0 just to keep up.

the frame is probably the most valuable thing in the truck currently. anyone that looks for a frame replacement is almost a full year out...

The simple formula is that if it’s a truck with a Toyota badge, it’ll hold its value long term. Owners have always debated what drivetrains are best and yet every generation has seen people lining up to buy them second hand b/c so they’re obviously all pretty good.

We should also assume that the new turbo4 trucks will continue that positive trend, but not necessarily at Gen3’s expense. The current truck is well tested and has nothing left to prove. Many owners will still prefer to trade some extra turbo power for the smooth NVH characteristics inherent to a V6 design, 4.0 or 3.5.

I have both, 4.0 in a 2012, and 3.5 in a 2023. I would take the 4.0 with the old drive train over the 3.5 any day of the week. Currently have 190k miles on the 2012, time will tell with the 2023. Neither truck sucks, that's for sure.

Value is dependent on the buyer.
Depending on the intended use, it will either be more valuable or less valuable.
Typically, the 6 cylinder has more value on resell.

Is it important compared to the new 4 cylinder engine?
No one knows, the new 2.4 hasn’t been out long enough.

I’d say, it’s not important when comparing the two for their abilities.
The old 6, might be slightly more important to guys like me that are “new” to turbos and don’t like “more” technology that they are not familiar with.

In the end, I doubt it matter.

    1. My 1st 22RTE 4 cyl Turbo 5 spd (my fav) when young & dumb. Why did I sell it? Bought a house, maybe not so dumb, but still regret it.
    2. Next came a 22RE (accident)
    3. Two 3.0slows v6 5 spds. A 1990 (100k+) & 1995 (300k). Neither had head gasket issues. Body rust took the 95.
    4. Two tundras A 4.7LV8 (so smooth & good gas mileage) then a 4.6V8 (shifty, new body style, too big for me).
    5. Two 2GENs (2006) rust and current 2013 TRDOR with 120k.
    6. I have a deposit on a 23 TRD OR premium.
Out of all these motors, the 4.7L V8 was my personal favorite in that 1GEN tundra. So smooth! The shifting was spot on and had plenty of giddy up plus got decent mileage imo. I have driven the 3.5 and feel good about it in 2023. I always seem to buy one at end of model runs.

The weight is definitely a factor.

I had a '15 Taco with the single VVT-I 4.0, and my 4runner would run circles around it when it was stock, even with a few hundred extra pounds. I'm not sure how it would compare to a 3.5 Tacoma, though.

I'm not a huge fan of the motor overall. It's noisy as fuck, and not fuel efficient. But, I bet it would perform better if they had used a 6 speed transmission and better differential gearing.

The "Legacy" V6 is not very important. I think the I4-turbo will outperform it.
