I detest cutting anything anymore, I always seem to mess it up a little somehow. Even if it's not enough to notice, I know it's there. So I also thought about just leaving the existing USB port there as a "dummy" and installing a new one behind the dash until I looked up the replacement part... just under $100 IIRC so no, that's not going to happen. I'd rather put any more time and money toward a new head unit now. There are some PNP Alpines that not only have more power, wireless Car Play and other options, but also replicate all of the vehicle data, steering wheel controls, etc. that the OE Toyota head units have. Just a matter of how much you're willing to do and/or put up with... and money I guess. :spending:

What replacement part is $100? I just used a $10 cable from AliExpress which connects to the back of the oem headunit (where you disconnect the factory plug) and gives you a usb-a plug that you can then plug an extender to.

I didn't know that. The Toyota replacement port, the part that goes in the dash is around $100.

I looked at some photos of the back of the OE head unit and didn't see a basic USB port. So is it just a standard USB IO port back there or is it some kind of proprietary connection on one end? If it's just a matter of unplugging the existing USB dash port and plugging in a USB extension cable or an adapter of some sort and then an extension cable, I'm in! Thought it might be more complicated. Do you happen to have a link to the part you used?

    TIA!

It's a proprietary connection. Cable and more info listed in the thread below. I have a non JBL headunit, not sure if the cable is the same for the upgraded radios.

Sweet! Also have a non-JBL stereo. Wish I’d found your thread earlier.
    Thanks for that.

EDIT: Ordered the USB adapter from Ali-Express. They say it’ll be here in about three weeks.

I’d like to hear how the extraction goes. I may or may not have done this on another of my cars.:anonymous:

Haven't extracted it yet, but the answer is going to be:

    Very very not well.

Finished the above Nilight Tailgate LED lite strip thing.....

    • Wire Loomed everything and electrical taped after that.
    • used a "POSITAP" for the reverse signal wire
    • for attaching I used 3M extreme "velcro esque" stuff but made out of plastic and has 2 scratchy halves this has no soft half.... like they use on the ez pass tags
    • Came out very nice except the lights right/passenger side has a tendency to curve out from the tailgate and separate from the truck. Ibelieve was thorough with cleaning the area prior with alcohol (3-4x) and also let the light sit out flat for a couple days and even rolled it in reverse to hopefully negate the curved memory of the strip light.
    • there appears to be a slight delay (.25 of a second?) from when I press the brake pedal and the brake LEDs go off. The stock brake lights are the normal timing.
    • Between the Curt Trailer connection kit, wire looms, Reverse signal wire the cavity behind the D's side Tail light is somewhat crowded
    • 48 inch is in my opinion the best size of the 2 available. (48/60 inch) as there really isn't sufficient flat area to adhere a light 60 inchs long too.
    • looks pretty good and you don't really notice it unless you look for/at it except of course when it's on.
    • pretty sure there's enough room for the spare tire tool
    • not as bright as i'd hoped but still pretty bright especially at night.
I tried to do a job that I would not ever have to F#&K with it again. I also plan on putting a y connector and hooking up an oval OEM style or actual OEM connector for the trailer hitch on the bumper. I am pretty sure other than the push button start my SR has nearly every option the SR5 has now.

I parked beside an "older" buddy of mine and at the same time pulled off some American 4th of July RED, WHITE and BLUE Does that count?

Interested in how it goes. I’ve got an SR5 and I’d love a plug and play LED option.
