Paint/Clear Coat Failure - Silver Streak Mica

The clear coat/paint on my 2012 Tacoma has been fading and getting worse over the past 2+ years. The hood and roof are the worst areas and while I tried polishing and waxing, it continues to get worse. I have been in contact with my local Toyota Dealership as well as Toyota Customer Service and they advised me that there is no service bulletin or recall for this color paint (I had my wife's white RAV4 repainted 2 years ago under recall). I registered my complaint with them and was wondering how many others have the same problem with this color paint and what have you done to remedy. Perhaps if enough owners call in and complain, they may issue a recall.

Toyota has historically shown complete apathy to addressing paint issues within the period of the vehicle warranty, at 11 years out you are SOL.

 

My 2013's gray roof is starting to fade pretty bad as well. From what research I have done it's a pretty common issue among many different Toyota models. I will probably try to take it to a body shop in a year or two to at least get an estimate. The rest of the vehicle looks fine aside from the regular wear and tear that happens on a 10 year old truck.

Maaco quoted me $1300 to do my hood/roof on my 08 Mica double-cab. I've ordered some cans of 2k clearcoat and will sand and spray and be done with it for a while. Not pretty new paint, but will protect and look better than what it is now.

 

When you do it an you post some pics? My clearcoat is heading south, down here in Hell Arizona it's tough on the finish. Trying to figure all my options.

2012 Silver streak mica DCLB starting to fade more and more. Got an estimate to have it painted. $7400.

 

2012 Magnetic Gray Metallic started showing signs about a year ago, just when I started considering selling, and has progressed rapidly. This is a recent pic. I got one estimate for repainting/recoating hood and roof at $3K.

2nd gen Tacoma's are the only model (AFAIK) with the white problem not covered. When I took in my RAV there was an old Camry in line ahead of me, so it's not just model year based.

I don't expect any other color to be addressed, as it's two different problems.

The white is a problem of not being bonded to the primer (peeling)

Other colors, as you describe, is the failure of the clearcoat due to various environmental factors. On a 2 stage paint, the clear is what makes the base look good.
