Anyone concern about turbo?

I did a lot of research on turbo, and I keep getting to the same conclusion. Is anyone here concern about turbo?

Minus turbo reliability, cabin size and suicide doors, the 24 Tacoma is a better fit for me than the current model.

I don't tow or haul anything, so having disc brakes and coil springs is much better for off-roading (my main purpose) than drum brakes and leaf springs. While his non factory installed disc brakes broke, Talon mentioned that the stuff he wants to do (what I want to do) is too much for drum brakes to handle. Exterior and interior of the 24 Tacoma looks better in my opinion. I love the Tundra taillights and interior. That 14-inch screen will be excellent for a 360/front terrain camera. Something I have been waiting since Gen 3; especially since I plan to do solo off-roading.

If you are getting the 24 Tacoma, does the use of turbo give you any hesitation? Why or why not?

Not one bit. I’ve owned turbo cars all my life, maintain it and you won’t have an issue.
The problem is people are going to try and tune them, so if it is used I might be hesitant.

 

Don’t lose sleep over reliability; If Toyota does a turbo, bank on it being at least more durable than the other turbo fours out there. Longer term, who knows.

What should have your attention is the Highlander, which coincidentally dumped the same V6 for the same basic 2.4T.

On paper, there’s significantly more torque offered at lower rpm’s than the cancelled V6, running through an 8 speed. Looks great, yet so far in real world testing it’s slightly slower than the V6, adds one extra mpg, and makes more noise/vibration. But I hear the emissions are very clean.

My advice to a prospective Gen4 buyer is to go buy a V6 right now with a proven, reliable Tacoma wrapped around it. Skip the initial turbo 4, save your dough for a year or two, and put your trade + cash on the hybrid and it’s eye-popping 465 lb ft.

 

School buses, dump trucks, tractor trailers are some drum brake examples.

Yea, I like discs for lots of reasons, but drums work well in many applications.

 

Will it last past 300,000 miles?

 

much like any other truck... some will, some won't.

If you're so concerned you likely shouldn't buy one.

 

Never had a vehicle I liked. I did put 60,000 miles in my 2002 salvaged manual CRV in 2.5 years for reference. I drive a lot, and cross country many times.

 

Follow the Toyota maintenance schedule and you'll be fine. If you want more peace of mind buy an extended warranty.

 

I would say this is not the truck for you if your driving style is staying the same.

And I'd think MPG would be of interest, pointing you to a non truck vehicle.

 

Yeah...sure bud...I'm concern that the only reason Toyota moved to Turbo was because of the EPA and CAFE. Hell, Toyota had to paid 180 million to the EPA over a silly lawsuit.

Turbo is for EPA, not for consumers. If I buy a Toyota truck, with excellent Maintenace and care, it should last 20 to 30 years, not 150,000 miles. It should be bulletproof, that the whole reason we buy Toyota.

If it wasn't for the stupid EPA, we would have had diesel instead.

 

I only drive trucks and I only drive manual.

 

No concern at all, but I would no where near go 10k oil changes on a turbo engine..

 

I plan on changing the oil every 3K. Every other vehicle I had; I changed the oil every 5K.

Well, the pool of choices meeting that criteria in the new vehicle market are certainly slimming down.

I'm thinking history will repeat itself.

Only God knows that answer. Will my 3.5 last past 300K? Probably not.
