What saves us is home values in eastern CT are so much lower than you downstate guys. We've got a raised ranch on 3/4 acre and house is only $5800

 

When I bought my raised ranch back in 2010, I was paying under $5k in taxes for that.

Now I'm pushing $7k almost.

We think about getting out in the next few years and maybe heading back west to CO or ID, but then we have the issue of the housing out there is crazy expensive. Then if you actually want some property then you need to fork out a ton of money or live wayyyyyy out where there is zero industry. I need my job to go full remote in the next few years...

 

yes, I recognize the location. Tried to buy a house near there. Never noticed all that, usually turned in front of them & drove by the fields.

This house, 10 years back taxes were IIRC $3200. Last year was $4,600, this year $5,600.
Since Portugal won't let me buy beachfront property until I've lived there for 5 years, I'm learning about inland Portugal land. Make money here, then go LIVE somewhere else.

 

That's what my parents are doing. They did what they set out to do; come here, make a good living, make sure their kids are set, and then move back. They already bought a house in the little town we're from. After my mother retires next year, they're gone.
