Trying to find the source of a problem. I frequently notice black dots on my truck. If not washed off, withing a few days they have turned into a dot area where the paint is totally gone. It makes mini craters in the paint right where the spots were. I find no signs of any leaking when inspecting the undercarriage. Don't know what it could be.

    Pictures?

What is required to remove the spots?

Sounds like fallout from an industrial area.

I do not live in a heavy industrial area. They can be removed even with just soapy water though not usually just with a auto car wash.

The paint or the clearcoat? If it's eating paint that quickly it has to be something highly corrosive. I've seen bird shit etch through clear coat pretty quickly but not paint.

What part of the country/city? What do you park under? Are you driving through any puddles? Is the truck leaking any fluids? What panels are the dots appearing on? Are there pictures?

The vehicle is 15 years old. Not much for a shiny clearcoat. The spots eat through the paint, not clearcoat. I looked underneath and see no evidence of any fluid leaks.

I park my truck close to railroad tracks. I've heard some folks talk about brake dust from railcars, being a issue.

Yes I was wondering if the brakes or clutch could be for some reason spewing more dust than usual but see no evidence of it.

Can you post us some photos? This is one the main reasons why I like ceramic coating. It can add a thin layer of protection to the paint's surface for things such as brake dust, brake fluids, and bird droppings. It makes cleaning a breeze as well.
