Poor Gizmo! He was very lethargic yesterday and threw up a few times. I thought maybe he just got into something in the back yard. He ended up throwing up another 7-8 times during the night. Took him to the vet first thing this morning. He's got HGE (easier to Google it). The vomiting caused severe dehydration and was borderline life threatening! Luckily got him to the vet in time I think. They're keeping him until tomorrow afternoon to pump fluids back into him. Apparently any dog can get HGE and they don't know what causes it.

Typically hge is in older dogs... we used to call it the adult version of parvo as far as signs and symptoms go..

Thank you. Apparently normal red blood cells to actual blood fluid level should be around 35-40%. Meaning 35-40% of blood drawn will be red blood cells, the rest whatever other fluids make up the blood. Anything over 70% means life threatening levels of dehydration mainly because there's no extra fluid in your blood and that can lead to blood clots and death. His was 72%! As soon as they got the blood results back, they attempted to explain it to me. And pretty quickly whisked him to the back to start treatment.
I wasn't in a real good mental state to understand, coupled with a lack of sleep. The vet finally just said "google HGE and be prepared to be scared".

On the early side for his breed... we would see it a lot after a dog was boarded or super stressed out

We did just get a new puppy 3 weeks ago, who acts like a puppy. At first Gizmo was freaked out by her, wanted nothing to do with her. Then they started playing hardcore. So maybe a combination of playing more often than usual and the stress of a new puppy. Combined with blocking off the sunroom to prevent some peeing in the house, and making them go thru the kitchen in order to go outside. Going thru the kitchen also freaks Gizmo out sometimes for reasons unknown. He would go all the way around the house to go thru the sunroom to go outside, instead of just going thru the kitchen. He's a sensitive fella.

Gizmo has recovered quickly and is now home! His original PCV test (percentage of red blood cells to water) was originally 72%. The vet said he can go home when he's under 50%. They tested him this morning and he was at 48%! They called me on the way to work. I turned right around and brought him home. The vet said he may still have a little diarrhea but beyond that he's good to go.

Hello SC folks. I just relocated here from Northern Virginia and was hoping to find a local club similar to the one I left behind (Off-Camber Crawlers). Looking to hit the trails with a new to me 97 4Runner.

Oh shit, my bad. But damn, I remember the days that this thread blew through the pages. Step away for too long and you come back to 40 maybe 50 unread posts.
