Most of my vehicles - over the many years - have had sunroofs - only had one issue and it was with a Conversion van and that was easily remedied. I purposely bought one (my truck) without the sunroof, because of the decreased headroom...I'm short (5'9") but I wear a hat...it would have NOT been an issue. I wish I had got the sunroof - not a big deal, but if I had to do it over I would have got one.

I miss sunroofs, what I don't miss is forgetting to close it then a surprise thundershower power washing my interior.

The third gen flashes the warning light and a message on the screen "Moonroof Open" if you shut the truck off without closing it first.

Any truth to a rumor that a shady salesman told me.

He said the inside cab height (headroom) is less with a moonroof vs hard top.

I think it’s BS, what say you?

One more thing to break as they say. I think many like the idea of a sunroof but don't use it as much as they think they will. I have a sunroof on my 4th gen V8 4Runner and rarely use it.

Also, I intentionally bought my pro without one when comparing 2018 vs 2019 because I wanted the extra headroom that came without having one.

Hmm. Doesn't the moonroof either lift slightly and track back; or tilt at one end?
I can't imagine how either of these equate to less headroom...but, who knows?

The tracks and mounts take up space between the roof and headliner. But I know on my non-sunroof truck there is a pretty decent air space between the roof and the headliner. If someone had a non-sunroof truck, they could have a custom headliner made that would give them another 1-2 inches of headroom.

Here is my headliner down when I sprayed sound deadener into the roof skin. You can see there is about 1-2 inches of spacers.

Sunroofs make headroom a little less. They also make the interior hotter in sunlight if you don't pull the cover. I like them because they make interior seem more open and less claustrophobic. I hardly ever actually open the glass but use the tilt open feature combined with the sliding open rear window often. And the factory ones DO NO LEAK !

I have to call shenanigans on that statement; I've had a sun/moon-roof in virtually every car I've owned since 1979; many of which have logged well over 200,000 miles, and I've never had one leak. That said, I did drive through a carwash one time when I had an old school "removable" sunroof; yeah, Mr. Murphy came along for the ride, not only did the interior of my car get soaked, I was wearing a suit on the way to pick up a client. :rain:

I didn't want one on my Tacoma but the Wife's 4Runner has it. I don't care for them but she likes it. Our old classic 99 sr5 4runner doesn't have it and I'm okay with that as they are a pain in the ass when needing to fix them. A 3rd gen 4Runner is expensive to fix a sunroof. I'm fine without one but totally up to the owner.

    Love old threads!

Back in 2000, I got my wife a new Camry. She was adamant that she wanted a sunroof, so I spent an extra fucking $1,000 for that hole in the roof. She used it one time only to find out she didn't care for the wind noise above her head! No more sunroofs ever after that one.

Oh, and they are way more trouble than they are worth when they break, and they will break!

I had a sunroof in a few vehicles from an aftermarket flip up in an 85 Ford escort I had as a teenager and a power one in an 87 prelude si those were never any issues. Then I got a 2003 Outback with a power sunroof and a 2006 Jeep Liberty with the same. Problem with the last two was where I live I my off street parking was outside near large trees and there was always a need to keep the drains in the tray mostly the front drains cleared out or the tray would fill up when I was parked in the rain and leak down on the floorboards. The issue is the seals on these roofs keep most of the water a dirt out not 100%. Water and any dirt that get past the seal is drained out of four tubes in the corners of the sunroof tray to under the vehicle body.

I don't have one in my SR5 it's only a option in TRD models I don't really miss it because if the troubles I've had. If I had a garage or car port maybe I'd feel differently because it was nice in fair weather to have it open.

One aspect of having a "tiltable" roof is when parking on a hot day with lots of sun; you can tilt up the back of the roof (leaving the shade cracked an inch or so), and the interior of the car is much cooler when you get back in.

I've had sunroofs on all of my many vehicles for over the last 25 years. Cars, suv's and trucks. Not a single one has leaked, broken or failed. Take all of the negative comments on this thread with a grain of salt

I’m a tad over 6’3” and couldn’t fit comfortably with the moonroof. I still wanted leather so I went with a Katzkin buy on this site.
