EDIT: TL;DR - "unlock" codes are NOT needed when moving this unit between different trucks.

    ------ original post / query --------

I've pulled the (fully operational) stock non-JBL head unit from my 2014 AC 4.0L 6MT Tacoma and put in a nice 9" JOYING® aftermarket unit that has more features and sounds better.

I plan to sell the stock non-JBL head unit on eBay; they're going for at least $150-$250.

Are these head units "locked" to the vehicle's ECU/immobilizer in any way? Can the stock non-JBL head unit just be plugged into any other (compatible model year) Tacoma and work normally, or will it require some kind of "unlock" code before it will operate in a different Tacoma?

The head unit's Toyota part # is: 86140-04130.

I can't speak to compatibility with your truck. The best I can offer is clear documentation of exactly what this unit is, you'll have to DYOR as to whether it will work in your truck. It was a working pull when I removed it. Note, I bought the truck used (from 1st, original owner) at 60K miles. I have never (not even once) tested the CD player so I don't know if that works. I would guess that it does since the 1st owner took pains to disclose anything and everything that was wrong with the truck when he sold it to me.

Here are photos of the back & top of the actual unit I plan to sell:

They are not locked or protected in any way that I'm aware, I bought a nav one several years ago to put in mine and it was plug and play.

I'm pretty sure 14-15 will interchange, possibly as far back as 12 but I'm not 100% on that.
The nav one I got came out of a Sequoia so they fit other Toyota vehicles as well.

I can’t speak to the 14/15 to 12/13 non JBL switch but I can tell you that switching from a 14/15 JBL to a 12/13 JBL is NOT plug and play, and requires extensive work/parts to get it to run. I have a 14 JBL and will be switching out my 13 JBL in time (I dig the look of the 14/15 and prefer the OEM look as well). It’s not too difficult but it’s no walk in the park either. Do your research, and it may be plug and play for you non JBL guys but I I’ve got a feeling the mounting brackets are going to be different at the very least, it looks like he’s including his, as well as the mounting frame/trim piece, so that’s a plus.

Thanks for the replies here. I didn't mean this to turn into a "for sale" thread via TW.

When I get an Ebay listing up, I will either cross-post the URL here (if that's allowed in Forum rules,) or interested people can PM me & I'll share it with them individually.

I haven't decided whether to sell the brackets with it as I am trying to get the brackets to work with the 9" JOYING head I bought. (I might have to cut or bend some protruding tabs on the brackets.)

Posting the link it'd still have to go in the marketplace and follow the rules.

OK. As I said this wasn't intended as a "for sale" posting. Just wanted to know about the codes/possibility of vehicle-specific locking. There are a ton of these units floating around on eBay so people can go search one out there.

No, There is no code to unlock the radio or are they code/vehicle specific. I have swapped out non JBL head units in the past. No code was needed. There is a very informative thread on what you need to do to swap these into earlier year 2nd Gens here: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...tion-retrofit-diy-w-info-part-numbers.318616/
