I do my own using Fluid Film. I really can't tell the difference. They both need a maintenance coat every 2 years.

I purchased a case of Woolwax aerosol cans on Amazon a few years ago and that's what I use. I tend to use about 4 or 5 cans per year when I apply it around November. There may even be some Prime Day deals going on today

How difficult would you say it is, and have you been able to keep yours relatively rust free even dealing with Michigan winters? Also I don’t have the means to raise up my truck so would it be difficult to do it all just sliding underneath the truck? Thank you for the insight much appreciated.

I do have a hoist and it does make it easy. But with that said, there is no problem getting into all the books and crannies using plain old ramps. You got this.

Have either of you guys used this sort of stuff from day 1, curious as to how effective it has been against rust over the years.

I don't have a hoist and actually live in an apartment complex. Figure on it taking an hour or two, at least the first time.

As for your second question: I got my truck when it was 3 years old so I didn't use it from day one. However, it has kept things pretty rust free. The only place I can think of that has any rust right now is my hitch receiver, but that's typical. Every year when I reapply, I take a wire brush and knock off anything I see, if anything, and then apply a rust reformer spray before I apply the Woolwax.

Keep in mind that Woolwax/Fluid Film are designed to not cure so heat and water can wash them away. Not very easily, but with time and pressure it will. Woolwax is much thicker than Fluid Film though (and smells better from what I'm told) so you won't likely have to touch it up like you would with Fluid Film.

If you want to see a true testimonial to the products working, there's a video of a guy applying Fluid Film to the bottom of his dad's Colorado from new. The next year he has another video on this and realized he forgot to spin the front tires the first year and so the half of the CV axle that didn't get coated has surface rust while the other half looks brand new.

    20230712_115650.jpg

Here's my current frame. Keep in mind, that brown you see is NOT rust. It actually clay from my recent trip to Copper Harbor. I haven't had a chance to wash it yet.

Nice place! Nice part of the county. Been by there many times.

    Good luck with the sale!

Thanks. Sad to see it go, but none of us kids are in a spot were we could move there. It really is a good location.

was running a post 4th of July sale.. not sure if it’s still going on, free shipping over $50. They run specials all year. $2 off per can of you buy in bulk, they have 1 and 5 gallon options if you have a gun.

I got a quote from Hamiltons Auto Detailing in Clio, MI since they are one of the few spots in MI that are wool wax “dealers”

Their price is $550 for a first time application and then $50 each time you need any touch ups, seems like a ton of money though.. however I do think wool wax is my best shot at keeping the rust away.. thoughts?

I moved to Michigan in 2021 and Coated mine with woolwax after talking to these guys. The Michigan guys know what’s best and are helpful and knowledgeable about this state. Listen to them because they know what they are doing! I only have a little under 4000 miles on my truck and don’t drive it much in the snow but Kent county puts so much Brine down that the Residual kicks up on the dry days like fog on busy roads. You know we’re breathing that stuff? Just moved to the Lansing area last month, not sure how bad it is here. I’m ocd about detailing.. I leave the outer frame exposed adding multiple coats of a wax sealant and then the Adam’s under carriage spray on anything I didn’t want woolwaxed. I put sealer wax on rubber gloves and get under there and put it all over my exhaust as well after washing that too. I am insane. This was a 15 hour detail process last week.

I used about 9 rattle cans.. pressure wash your undercarriage, put cardboard down and put your truck up on some wood blocks if it’s not lifted. Wear some crappy clothes, a bandanna and eye protection. Cover your exhaust and spray. Then wash your truck after.

They probably have a system to doing it. However, you can do it yourself for much cheaper.

    Ive got this kit
    https://www.woolwaxusa.com/WoolWax%E2%84%A2-Undercoat-Kit-4-Quarts-PRO-GUN-Straw-or-Black_p_42.html

I do it 1-2x a year in my driveway. Only takes like 10 minutes.

it’s definitely worth doing, makes a huge difference.

2nd from the right going in. Still got hung up on the transmission crossmember. Had to pull line to winch myself forward a tiny bit. After that, it was fine.

on the way out, it was late so I took the right-most line (pretty obviously the easy route) and drove it unassisted.

The trail in from the south was pretty fun. Had to winch twice right at the beginning. Got cross rutted in a muddy section and got stuck in the only water hole with a soft bottom.
