Chrome Paint Peeling on Rear Bumper - Fix options

Hey Folks,

The chrome paint on my right rear bumper is peeling off. I was wondering if anyone knows my options for fixing this, or if I’ll have to just replace the bumper?

Just my 2 cents but I'm cheap. I'd probably remove it, strip it, sand it, and rattle can it. There are also covers that you can purchase for them as well.

Once in a while, these appear on Facebook Marketplace for pretty cheap. But third vote on strip, prep and paint to match body color or bumper.

 

I feel like finding a used set of chrome coated ones should be easy. I have a pair in my garage since I swapped for black. I think it's not as common as changing out the stock grille but it's not far behind. Ask in your local bst forum (most regional sub forums here have some form of marketplace/craiglist thread).

 

People remove these all the time, I’d just locate a new set on eBay or Facebook.

Or if you want body color, Ecoological shells work well.

 

Thank you all for your responses. Unfortunately, I am not mechanically inclined so I won't be doing any sanding myself haha. But I was able to find an OEM set of replacements on FB marketplace

 

What are those stains on it , looks caustic.
See if your dealer can get you a Goodwill from Toyota that's not right mines a 13 and still looks new , to nice of a truck to rattle can.

 

FYI. You do not need to remove the bumper to replace the bumper caps. Body shop guy replaced mine on a previous Tacoma in less than 30 min.

 

Amazon has a couple in black for about $85

Or rattle can them black or another complimentary color

Definitely go for bumper caps but do you park it under a drip?

Its kinda embarrassing how they put plastic " chrome " bumper on truck lol.... Trucks really are going soft now days. When I realized mine had it I felt big disappointment.

 

Yeah it's an unfortunate story. I actually bought the truck about a month ago from a Toyota Dealer. I'm not kidding, the day after I bought it this peel shows up on the bumper. I definitely did not see it at purchase and I had it parked in my garage barely driven. I went back and forth with the dealer and they unfortunately refused to do anything or help me. That brings me here... lol

 

I appreciate it man, I actually found an inexpensive pair close by on marketplace

 

Got my Tacoma month ago too from Toyota dealership. They took off covers in front of me but I thought it was real chrome lol... I would never in my life think I would see a truck with plastic presented as chrome. There are 40-50$ cheap plastic "chrome" bumpers you can buy, one side even, its plastic anyway.. Tacoma is still truckiest truck out there compared to other modern trucks, ancient almost. So still gotta say thanks to Toyota


Its just people now days want trucks with comfort, luxury and all that non sense. They are not really doing any truck work, and want car for flex so I guess that's who Toyota is trying to target with exterior, while keeping the build same for real truck lovers.
