Oooof. Wow, looks like a complete failure at all levels. Toyota and your dealer really dropped the ball on this one. WTF? This should have been dealt with under you bumper to bumper warranty. How in the hell can they claim rock damage in that location? And especially since it's not chipping. To me, it clearly looks like the paint is failing due to the paint not bonding to the primer. 2 main areas are affected on these 3rd gen's. The back window area like yours and under the hood along the fenders.

True. Those are the exact places where the paint on my '17 are flaking off.

Because they genuinely don't care about you or your experience. Majority of dealers atleast.

Toyota's integrity sucks. Hopefully you didn't buy your new Tacoma from the same dealer

    Questions for the group:

The paint is failing on my '18 below and behind the driver side rear door window, and the cowling, right behind the hood. Paint failure started at about year 4 of ownership.

    1. Are your paint failures in the same locations
    2. Where was your Tacoma assembled?

Sorry to hear that. I have a '17 and the paint is failing around the window frame (mostly on the rear doors), and in the engine bay along the edge about 1/2 way back.

Mine was assembled in MX. Check your VIN #. If it starts with a 3, it's MX.

Mine is also a 2017 and the paint is flaking around the front and rear windows, mostly drivers side and engine bay. It was manufactured in Baja also.

I have a 2017 white from Texas. Has one spot on the hood and another on the driver side door around window.

Adding my white tacoma to the list. Made in Baja, Mx in 10/2017. 38k miles now.

I noticed just last week the paint failing on the rear passenger side around the window. Its definatly not from rust or rock chips...the paint is clearly separating from the metal. So far it's about the size of a quarter, but I can see more flaking running up and down the same area, so it's going to get worse. I checked the engine bay and didn't notice any paint issues so far. It's crazy an disappointing to see this happen on a Toyota.

What's the general consensus as far as best course of action? I think i saw someone post that they had a case with Toyota Corp opened...any luck? I believe truck is beyond any warranty coverage.

I posted on April 21, 2023 (#456) that I sent a complaint letter to Toyota Headquarters to document my concerns. They gave me a case number and basically blew me off. My 2017 has 45K (manufactured in Baja) and is worse than yours in the same areas and engine bay. It is going to get worse. The more noise they hear may cause them to take some action to include them in the paint repair program that they have for so many other vehicles. I attached a copy of the complaint letter I sent if you are interested in reviewing or using any part of it you can find it in post #456.
