Interesting I mailed mine on the 30th from
Cali and they got it on the 4th… I got impatient and called them 2 days ago… and I believe they mentioned they have a 2-3 week turnaround.

Ok, that's a relief then I should be getting the results this week. Maybe they're closer to the 3 week turnaround. Everyone was dragging ass coming back to work on the 5th so you might as well toss that week out the window

No problem. No doubt the long weekend got in the way. Looking forward to the outcome. Bet it's probably fine, but would be some peace of mind to know.

Exactly why, any vehicle I own gets it first oil change at 500 miles. Inexpensive insurance.

From my experience, excess fuel in oil over time will swell the filter material, your filter looks good.

Just got my results a couple hours ago... "If high fuel turns up repeatedly there could be a problem, but hopefully this will be a one-time thing." o_O

The problem with results is that they mean nothing if you have nothing to compare. Guess I'll have to keep driving and testing to figure out if something is wrong! Ha. Truck is still a baby, 1750 miles with zero driving issues or warning lights. I've been sniffing the ol' dipstick more often and it still has the fuel smell but oil seems cleaner on the rag. I don't know if it was a good, bad or ugly thing to change the oil at 1k as it prob gave me nothing but extra worry however, it lead me to learn a lot more about the truck. Pros and cons I suppose.

Curious how my results stack up with any other Tacoma after 1k miles.

Good to know and their advice seems solid. Plus you're right, without a "before" you can only measure yours by the averages.

The two key measurements, at least with respect to too much fuel in the oil, are the flashpoint, the point at which the oil will ignite, and of course the fuel percentage. Your oil's flashpoint looks to be pretty good to a little high and the fuel percentage is right at the uppermost limit. Bottom line? You have a good nose. ;)

My take would be that things are probably normal, like others have said, for a new engine. Per their advice, I'd keep an eye on the oil level and then probably run another test after your next oil change. I'm betting you're good.

Thanks for reporting back and keep us posted!

EDIT: Hopefully @maxmk8 will share his results for comparison.

I changed mine at 10K. Sent sample in. They said fine to change at 10K. Don't make things complicated.

Do you mean that you sent a sample to Blackstone? If so, can you share your results?

FWIW coming from the old school of changing oil every 3K miles, I still cringe at 10K mile oil changes. (We did full tune-ups every 12K miles too. ;)) It's probably fine. I change ours at 5K these days (except our collector car and that's once a year since it doesn't get driven that much). Even when I'm looking at CarFax reports I still tend to shy away from 10K oil change intervals... but I'm old school. That's just me. :anonymous:

Thanks for the positive feedback and emotional support during this trying time :) I think the truck gonna make it and I don't have to scrap it just yet. That black oil at 1k threw me for a loop but you can't argue with the results. Guess a little girl scout juice never hurt nothing!! Blackstone might as well send me a few more free testing kits cuz I'm gonna need em'

First oil change for me too. Not sure what the factory fill uses but I would rather have my prefered oil in her. 90% of engine break-in is competed by 500 miles. I’m only at 217. You know on high end race cars they do the first change at 50 miles… I will do one more extraction at 500, then the filter at 1k. I know I’m nuts but oil is cheap and I do believe it produces a better motor to minimize microscopic scoring.

I put them in another thread I think. Jesus that 2% fuel is no bueno. Haven’t seen one that high

Yeah, seeing the "Hopefully, this will be a one-time thing" from your engine oil analysis at 1k miles isn't ideal. Then again, it's still within the values right at 2% so not much I can do but keep driving and check back in a few thousand miles.

Just spend $30 (obd fusion app+adapter+Toyota PIDs) and monitor every possible parameter. No need sniffing, unless it is your thing

Are you guys driving your truck and getting the oil temp up to burn off any extra moisture or fuel in the oil before sampling?

Even just starting your truck cold and moving to the other side of the driveway to change the oil can throw off your fuel %.

While sending in oil samples of the first few thousand miles is nice to establish a baseline, it's just going to freak you all out on your new truck when the wear metals and silicon are high from break-in. Blackstone is going to tell you it's all normal for a new engine and to check back after a few oil changes once the engine has had time to break in and you've changed the oil a few times to flush.

If you change your oil right after a 200mi continuous road trip and send that to Blackstone the fuel % won't be that high. I think your truck is fine, it's just going through it's normal break-in process.
