Geez, I sure hope your car is of European decent, or that stuff might upset it.

My oil gets changed every 5k, I do it on the 5k marks and the dealership does it on the 10k marks. My oil is still clean in appearance on my oil changes but has always had a slight scent of gasoline. Ive never had issues with the truck but have considered sending a sample out just for gee whiz. I currently have about 35k on my truck and last time I pulled the stick it was clean and still had the gas smell, going to do a change this weekend.

Sounds like having fresh synthetic oil all the time is causing the rings to take longer to seat. Maybe some blow-by, the reason for the gas smell. I did my last oil change at 9.5k miles...about same as the dealer when I had toyotacare. I didn't smell any gas in my oil when I changed it....just smelt like motor oil, plus it wasn't very dirty looking either.

Not sure I can see how fresh oil would cause them to take longer to seat. I’m not an oil expert and I haven’t stayed in a holiday inn express lately so it’s possible I suppose. Have you seen research supporting fresh oil causing the rings to take longer to seat? Not trying to be a skeptic or critic, tone is hard to get through via text. Just wanting to learn so I don’t hurt my vehicle in the long run.

I think the key word is "synthetic" not "fresh" oil. I think he's trying to differentiate between using dino vs synthetic oil for break-in purposes.

Yes most likely correct. I know synthetic oils can cause rings to take longer to seat due to the oils being more effective lubricants. Not sure on how intervals of changes would change that. The only thing I could see being the difference is less contaminants in the oil so the process would be cleaner. This of course is just my uneducated take on oil changes, I’m willing to be schooled up on this for sure.

How do you know this to be true? I have never heard or read anything like this related to using synthetic oil. I'm not calling you a lier, but would love to see your source that backs up this claim.

Just research. Also, could be different on newer cars that most manufactures now run synthetics from the factory. The attached photo is from VP racing.

Nice source! They absolutely do come from the factory with synthetic oil, so explain that riddle Batman.

Yes, it’s a riddle for sure. It could be the older engines were built on conventional oil specs and perhaps the newer ones are engineered for the synthetic oils. Might be outdated.

Well if true, this could very well explain the OP's gas smelling oil if the synthetic oil is retarding the normal ring break-in.

Would this theory result an oil consumption?
And where tis he fuel come from?
Direct injectors spray on compression stroke 270-320° depending on the injection mode
Hard to believe that air mixture is being blown past the rings.

The molecular composition of synthetics, vs regular dino oil is different. Dino oils have molecules of various size's, making these molecules harder to move past one another, which in turn makes moving engine components like rings that move against the cylinder walls, causing them to develop more friction. Synthetic oils have all the same size molecules making them easier move, which actually causes less friction to develop against those same components. In turn, the rings have a tougher time seating. We found this to be true with newly rebuilt engines filled with synthetic oils, rather than a dino oil. It seemed to take forever with the synthetic, if at all. You have to beat the living piss out of a new engine running wo to develop enough cylinder pressure to get those rings seated. I would guess the fresher, less contaminated the synthetic oil is, the more effective it would be against seating new rings.
You'll never see an engine builder that wants the most performance from an engine they just built tell you to break it in with a synthetic, even if that synthetic has a zinc additive in it.

how long have you been around vehicles? This has been known forever. I assemble motors at least a few times a year and we always use conventional oil for break in.
