Why not run Castrol 10w60? Works great in bmws

In before all the “scamsoil” shitposts lol. It’s amazing how people can ignore the data that does indeed show that Amsoil is damn good. Sure there are other great oils, but this is very impressive overall. TBN of 2.8 is a little too close for comfort for me, personally. I wouldn’t go farther.

Also changing the filter is the most annoying part of the job, so it’s not a huge deal to change the oil while you’re down there.

Flame me if already covered here. I only drive about 5k miles a year. What is everyone's take on time based intervals? So far I've changed at 1k, 5k, and 10k. 5k to 10k was about one year. Should I be changing every 6 months?

Just because the oil is fine doesn’t mean your rings aren’t clogging up. I therefore err on the side of 5-6k with top shelf oil, but I acknowledge there are many engines doing fine on 10k changes.

Not unless you live in a very humid place, and even then once a year is fine.

Thanks for the feedback. I live in the NE so only humid-ish summers.

I do 7500 oil changes not sure why. TO ME, 5k sounds too soon and 10k seems too much.

    Your statement makes no sense.

What do you mean clogged rings?

To fully clog an oil passage inside and engine you need to have some major sludge issues and most likely an oil pressure issue.

10k synthetic OCI aren't causing sludge issues.

Usually fuel dilution is the determining factor. Oil is cheap, engine wear is not.

Fuel will only build up if the truck is driven short distances and not given an opportunity to get up to normal operating temperatures. Once the engine is up to temp and being driven, any fuel in the oil is going to be vaporized and pushed out of the system into the intake.
Not allowing the engine to get up to temp is what kills oil and engines faster than anything.
If that’s your driving habit, then you do need to change your oil more regularly. My engine sees long drives and heavy load which keeps internal components free of deposits and carbon buildup.

I’m just curious, we’re at 39 pages and approaching 800 responses, have we arrived at a definite irrefutable answer to the original question yet? I’m just asking for a friend who is holding off changing his oil until he has a definitive answer.

    None
That only would happen from the break down due to heat in the old dino oils. Todays synthetics can take even the heat turbo engines put out, and rarely break down while meeting their oil change intervals. This bs about todays synthetics clogging pistons is just that, bs.

I got Tacoma TRD offroad new with 7 miles on it.
I took the advice of The Care Care Nut on Youtube(professional toyora mechanic) and did the 1000 mile break in period than changed the oil at 1000 miles to get out and little shaving of metal from the engine breaking in, and than every 5000 miles afterwards . I'm a big believer of oil changes every 5000 miles, especially with the price of new cars.

    Have fun with your Tacoma.
