    Hey y’all.

So, for a bit now, I’ve noticed something of a “thud” when coming to a stop (at the very point of stopping) and again when I take off.

I have suspicions that it may be related to a u-joint or driveshaft. However, my local mechanic said “everything looks good” but.. you know how that goes.

anyway, anyone have any thoughts? I swear it feels more in my front end, but again, they say everything looks normal.

I’ve also noticed more of a “rough” ride. Like.. something is out of balance.

While I cannot cite this, I did have my needle bearing swapped a while back, I’m hoping something didn’t shave off and make its way in my front dif :p

Looking for any thoughts, ideas, or starting points! Thank you.

Check the ball joints, lca and body cab bushings as well as your engine mounts.

I’d say get the truck on jack stands and start shaking suspension, brakes, and drive line related items. Things will move but shouldn’t be sloppy. For the drivelines I’d just check them yourself again for peace of mind.

FWIW I went through this recently and after retorquing all my suspension components, greasing my SPC UCA and getting an alignment, it was actually just my RCI skid plates. Thin nylon washers at the metal-on-metal mounting points solved it.

Could be your front suspension bushings where the lower bolt goes thru starting to go bad. Or LCA and/or UCA bushings too.

Pretty sure what you are describing is just axle wrap, which gets worse or more pronounced with a lift/bigger tires

Its really hard to check u joints unless you pull the driveshaft and inspect each joint for abnormal play. Even the slightest amount of play can translate into an audible clunk.

I check u joints by crawling underneath and shaking the piss out off the driveshaft.
A thud at start and stop could also be broken motor mount.
    My 2 cents.

I had a 2nd gen 4wd that was stock come into the shop with upper control arm bushings making a slightly thump noise at stop and go speeds. Also, in my 3rd gen I’ve noticed when I’m above 1/2 tank of gas that there’s a bit of noise from the gas moving around

Trying lubing up the Slip-Joint on your rear axle. It takes a teflon based lube for it. What happens is it dries out and the the splines are not allowed to slide back and forth freely and it catches and releases then.

Sounds exactly like what is axle wrap.

Of course it would help if the OP stated whether it was coming from the front or the back to help with the follow up replies to help him.

    HA!

No zerk there though. Have to take the axle out, mark everything when removing so that it goes back together in the same place.

You beat me to it. Hah!

The suitcase shaped gear case behind my rear seat goes thud when I stop and thud when I go. One of these days I will rearrange things to make it stop.

Also I think if a person trusts this forum than their mechanic, they need a new mechanic.

I agree, I hear of people having to do this 1-2 a year. I wonder if you can just drill and tap a zerk in their so long as you can clean up the inside splines?...........

Does it sound like a rolling bowling ball just before the thud?
