Never understood the claim that a manual makes you more focused on driving. Whenever I drive my manual car I don't even think about it. It's second nature; 2,4,5 and done.

It can be more engaging but in day to day driving it's not much of a difference to me.

It's from the same people that thought there was no need to go from dial up to high speed internet. I mean AOL had it all, right?

Just because the task has moved to system 1 thinking doesn’t mean it’s effortless in an absolute sense.

At the very least, it still occupies a hand that in that moment can’t really be texting or eating.

England has a two- tiered drivers training program. You can pass with either an automatic or a manual. If you pass with an automatic you can only drive an automatic. If you pass with a manual you can drive either one. Again, most countries around the world have a majority of manuals on the road. North America is the exception.

That's honestly one of the best parts for me. You can go back and forth from "I'm just going to work in auto-pilot mode" to rowing gears for the fun of it in a second. I don't understand people that complain about driving manuals from the same aspect, if I don't want it to feel like more work than driving an auto, it isn't (in anything but the worst stop-and-go scenario, which I purposely don't live in an area with that kind of traffic).

Like I've said elsewhere in this thread, it's not some dinosaur method of driving, the entirety of the world outside of the US still prefer manuals (and outnumber autos). I get roughly the same fuel mileage as an auto, maybe slightly worse with the 4.3 gears. I'm roughly equivalent 0-60 as the autos, thanks to the same 4.3 gears (not that it's relevant for the Tacoma, just usually a point made of why autos are better). If I was trying to set lap records at the Nurburgring? There's probably an auto that is better suited for that, I'd rather not focus on shifting gears at all. For daily driving? It's not some significant disadvantage or archaic way of driving, nor is it some huge hassle. I understand the whole "the future is now old man" point of view, but I don't think it applies whatsoever to manuals vs. autos in particular.

Also as far as Tacoma's go, I'd say the threads are 100:1 with complaints of the auto vs. manual transmission specifically. So at least in this case, it's not like we went from AOL to Google Fiber. It's like we went from AOL to Yahoo.

Just added toolbox and roof-rack to haul my fishing boat 100's of miles into the backwoods every week. Goodrich K02s, Bilstein 5100 front and back, no lift.
Hey, you gotta pick someone to complain about, and I chose the world.

“Well over 40 years”, you must be young….

Since cars were invented. Does not change the fact automatics make it a lot easier for crap drivers to be crappier than does a manual transmission.

They might not know how to drive a manual, but I'm sure they know how to push it. Lazy bastards

Geez this thread has made me realize I should definitely offer to pull it in and drive for them when I take it in for warranty service on my front left suspension squeak. Last thing I need is a new clutch and flywheel from a squeak.

    Late to the party...

My wife and I just completed a 3,000 mile road trip (two Canadian provinces and seven U.S. states) in my Tacoma; I was surprised to get not one, but two calls to our hotel rooms from the front desk, "Hello, Mr. Shoez? Can you come down and park your car? Our parking valet cannot drive a stick?" My response both times was, "Do I still need to pay the valet fee?" Both hotels waved the fee. :)

Why drive a stick when you are not sleeping in a tent atop the truck?

Don't offer, just tell them you are gonna pull it in/out and keep the keys!

Otherwise you'll be sitting there holding your breath waiting to hear the clutch slip or the rev limiter get hit..

For starters, both of our cars have manual transmissions, so regardless of which one we opted to take for the trip, it was going to have a stick. As for where we stayed, we camped out about half the time and treated ourselves to nice hotels the rest of the time, I mean, it is kind of hard to find a place to camp in downtown Ottawa, especially on Canada Day. :)

have you seen their left turn system?!? it's a riot driving a loaded down 4-cylinder chevy colorado on a busy 6-8 lane main road...

a co-worker would start humming the theme song to 'frogger' every time.

i think the whole state drank the flint water.
