    Hey Rob
I recalled that you were in the same boat as me with the accord. But yeah, I did the work and got mine to pass legitimately at the shop you reco'ed (but their location in Palo alto).

When I'm back in town, I'll share with you what I did. But basically, eBay downpipe, magnaflow aftermarket cat.... and shit ton of paperwork supporting what I did complied with the rules.

hm. why would a y pipe be an auto fail? you can even pass smog with no mufflers (i once did with a C7 corvette 3-4 years ago) as long as all else is intact, for example. but is just the form factor of the exhaust itself some kinda issue? strange. as long as there are some cats and o2's there for the guy to point his eyeballs at...

one thing i keep firmly in mind is that no one working at these places has expert parts and mechanical knowledge of every single vehicle on the road. if they see the important stuff they typically handwave things along.

my chief concern being the tune lately is mostly cuz i know that an ecu tune is an automatic fail seconds after they plug into your obd port.

my blower is not the TRD branded one, it was added to the truck around 50k miles, this is mark@eibach's truck which i just bought about a month ago. merely my dumb luck to live about 90min from the guy =D sorry boys, i got to it first haha.

Most of this group has the magneson and has a carb eo. I’m assuming it being an eibach truck it’s fine. they have it. Tune is only a fail if they check and it’s been proven by all the Ca folks it’s not picking it up.

Tacoma has 4 cats and it will fail the visual. Maybe you got lucky on the C7. I’d say that’s the gamble you can take and how lame CA is. TRD or non TRD tue blower is the same and there are carb certs for both versions.

I wouldn’t be worried on the Tacoma. To date a non issue. Plus the TRD or bully tunes won’t fail. Check if he even changed it if he didn’t it’s also non issue.

Why, because here's the deal. It is all up to interpretation.

    Example:

My 2017 ZL1 comes FACTORY with 4 catalytic converters. You would think that means do not tamper right? Wrong. You CAN tamper because the explicit wording on the underhood emissions equipment label reads 2 TWC (three way catalytic converter), not 4. What this means is that the manufacturer, GM in this case, handed over their emissions certifications to the USG showing that at least my particular model year ZL1 comes from the factory with 2 cat converters not 4, so if anyone who owns one chooses to hack or modify the secondary cats at all, they can do so without penalty. Those who do choose to penalize the owners who have, are usually promptly shown the underhood emissions label and told to eat a bag of dicks. :D

In the case of Toyota when they handed off their emissions certifications to the USG, they did so showing that all of their 1GR equipped Tacomas came with 4 cats on the underhood emissions label. What that means is that you cannot remove, or even modify what is in place of the factory cats unless you did so with an ARB certified cat or in our case replaced the factory stuff with cats that have a CARB EO number.

These are lawful loopholes. I'm no lawyer, but 100% of the time, in the case of my ZL1 you would win that fight due to technical incompetence of the manufacturer (or maybe even willful incompetence) which swings in the favor for the consumer.

then i guess the question is, does anything on this label under my hood tell them 4 cats rather than 2? xD

thanks, im just now finding this stuff online. it looks like theres no way to BS them about the number of cats, and i dont like the gambling aspect of all this. some places will look the other way on minor things such as secondary cats, intakes, etc.. others won't. i'm just gonna take it to a muffler shop tomorrow because the magnaflow exhaust i have may not line up in the oem spot with the 2-into-1 factory y-pipe/join-pipe that i got from prior owner (the bits with the secondary cats in them). i know a good place which did the muffler delete on a C7 i used to have. i'm all about throwing money at a problem.

ugh. commifornia. still trying to convince my gf to move to texas =D

Makes sense given the abbreviation. Any chance you have a source that outlines this one?

Go stock. It’s the best option anyways.

The stock intake is what it was originally designed to hook up to. Your other option IF YOU CAN FIND ONE is the TRD intake that is CARB approved. Easiest is to just hook up the stock one.

The above is correct...the TRD gen2 intake is carb approved but now we are dealing with the idiosyncrasies.

Meaning the TRD gen2 is carb approved... the maggy with bully dog tune is carb approved. But the TRD gen2 used on the maggy is not approved.

Go with the stock intake on the maggy...get smogged... swap it all back later.

Correct the visual stuff..don't give the tech anything to nick you on. And also... go to another smog shop.

yeah i still have the main 2 pieces of the stock intake, looking at how it goes together. i dont see how the box connects to the blower, as the inlet on the blower is just a flat machined surface.. hm. time for some fiddling but waiting til dusk. its hot as balls here lately.
