    Hey all!

I’m new to the forums, looking to purchase my first Tacoma. I’d like to get a new 23 before the 24’s come out, so I know I’m limited on time.

I went to my local dealer on Friday (nothing on the lot) and request a TRD off-road, double cab, 6’ bed in lunar rock. I wanted one with zero options, just the base truck.

They showed me a build sheet for a loaded one ($48k) and they said they could have in 10 days. The build sheet had a VIN #.

I asked if they could get one with no options. They then showed me a build sheet for exactly what I wanted for around $42k. But this build sheet didn’t have a VIN number. They said I could have the truck in 3 weeks. I negotiated $1500 off the MSRP price and went ahead and put $1,000 down.

Now I’ve been reading around on this forum about horror stories of people waiting months for their “allocation” to get filled. I guess I should have done more research before I took the dealer for their word. I don’t care how long it takes, my current truck is just fine. But I don’t want it to run into the 23/24 factory switch over. (I’ve heard the 24’s will start production in September)

Should I stick with this dealer/truck that doesn’t even exist yet? Or should I go find a truck or allocation for a truck that actually exists?

One thing I will add… we bought my wife’s 4 runner same dealer in 21. It was the same process, $1k down and didn’t have a VIN. And they made good on their word and it was deliver earlier than they had stated.

Looking for some options on how to proceed. I look forward participating in the forums once a get a new truck!

I’m wondering if your combo is even offered or available any longer.
LB, color, stripper in OR trim are not so common, let alone wanting all three. Add to that, maybe there’s a run on 23s since some/many don’t want to be early adopters (can’t blame em).
Shipping seems to be taking weeks, not sure how they can stand by their 3 week claim,, and not sure why they need a deposit for something that they can’t document. Did you see firsthand this build in their system?

stick with the truck you put a deposit on. based on your experience with the 4 runner, i would trust them, for now. i would press them for a VIN though, they should have it if the truck is to be delivered in 3 weeks.

in 3 weeks, you'll know if they tried to pull one over on you. at best, i think it's 50/50 but give them a shot. it is only 3 weeks.

good luck and welcome to TW.

Welcome to the forum. You are getting close to the production shift to the Gen 4’s but if they say that the other one is three weeks away then you’re probably okay. You have to decide if the loaded one if worth the extra money and a sure bet on getting it.

I took the green double-cab V6 TRD OR that was available because that’s what the COVID times demanded. Found out I like the OR package much better than a base model and enjoy the options. Paid a little more, but no regrets.

Leave the deposit in place and look around at other dealers. That’s what I did and ended up finding a dealer that had a Off Road long bed in Lunar Rock just three days out.

The OP wants a base off road (no extra options) not a base (sr) tacoma

    This.

Especially as 3rd gens are nearing the end of production.

Look online, call around, find the truck you want new on a lot, go buy it.

    Current deposit is a backup.

I’m in a similar boat. Have a deposit down on a TE that’s supposedly coming this week. But for what it costs it’s only $2k less than an almost loaded OR. Only problem is they’re few and far between. I’m going to another local dealer tomorrow who are asking for a $4k markup, and he offered me the truck which he says is due in tomorrow for $2k over MSRP. I told him I won’t pay a markup but I’ll come in tomorrow to talk about it. I’m seeing what happens this week between two different dealers who have inbound premium ORs. We shall see. I definitely wouldn’t want to give up my deposit yet either.

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
Tell them you want the very last ‘23 manufactured. Edit: with signatures of the peeps that built it.

There still is deals to be had I just bought a 2023 TRD off-road Silver premium package with sunroof all the goodies for a little under 3100 below sticker. Still has puppy breath build date end of June they just got it in. I was very fortunate since this would have been almost pretty much exactly how I would have ordered it. I think the only thing I’m missing is rear bed lights and 3D camera which I would have liked . Had a Pre-Runner many years ago and loved it . This one I like even more .

Odd that they have no Vin number at all. Usually there’s a Vin at some point pretty far out in the pipeline, but if it’s not built, then the last four numbers are missing from the Vin. Three weeks out I would think that there should be a VIN. I’m not entirely certain of the timelines on this. You might be able to get some more info from this thread. As someone else said, I would press them for a vin number https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...request-whatever-it-is-called.724431/page-889
There is a guy Dragonpro23 at the end of the thread. It seems like he might be able to give you some more specific answers on this process.

Thanks all for the replies. I will press them for a vin. I’m seeing the “loaded” one they offered me on their site now.

Almost wondering if I shouldn’t just cough up the cash and buy that one….

If you want a 2023,,, I am thinking you may end up doing this after waiting on nothing.
As far as the stripper. Again, press them to show you, some sort of official documentation on the build, not their dealer regional orders,, they can order whatever, but when big T is done,,, they're done.

Saw that video the other day and pretty nice selection.I’m guessing what state your in and that particular dealers allocations also if their dealing on them or not I would think has a strong impact on their inventory.

Lil Kenny stay finding Tacoma's. He found one with a Westscotts Design TRD Pro lift from the dealership. I definitely follow his social or Lil Kenny TV on YouTube.
