good argument, but thats really the only major problem with first gens, being that they are older, the second gens will probably get it eventually!

I think they're both great... 1st gens frame rust nuff said. 2nd gens Blower motor, weak stock leafs, weak interiors, older years with weak tail gates. Each has their pros and cons IMO

I moded 1999 Taco so much it had turned to Land Cruiser
They will but less severe because frame is not fully boxed so there is no place for moisture to hide and rust through from inside :D
I had first gen that went to Toyota crusher due to rust. It was awesome truck and if Toyota gave me choice to get new frame instead of crusher I would have kept the truck.
Now I still would have my 2gen truck. Towing capacity is number one thing, size (double cab that actually fits few people) is number 2 .As the quality goes They no different. Some items that Toyota took from first gen truck will wear out faster on much heavier truck but thats just life. So far I managed avoiding dealer service and my truck is out of basic warranty. I have a feeling wheel bearings are starting to loosen up but I dotn know if this is quality issues or issue with my wife driving that truck like rally car  and taking turns way to fast.

Nothing like a poll with this title to bring out all the 1st gen lovers/2nd gen haters...

I've had both, -0- issues with either. My 2nd gen is roomier, more powerful, more comfortable. That's why I have it now and not the 1st gen I sold. I sold it simply to buy a 2nd gen.

The only negative about my '02 AC was no rear AC doors. That alone puts the 2nd gens waaay ahead of 1st gens IMO.

As far as which is more reliable? I can only go by my experience - no difference.

A few years from now the thread will read "Which is more reliable - 3rd gen or 2nd gen Tacomas?" Then all the 2nd gen lovers/3rd gen haters will cry out 'They don't make anything like the good ol' 2nd gens anymore!! What's with Toyota anyway?'

Most of the people who whine about the "know issues" with the 2nd Gen Tacoma's are just bitter because they can't afford one.

Man I think you either got a lemon, or the previous owner abused the living hell out of it. Probably both, because you shouldn't be having hardly any of those problems except maybe the squeeky clutch, and possibly the wheel bearings if you have big tires/wheels on (or the previous owner did).
